Ulyana and Leon chose an elegant and timeless theme for their wedding, and wanted to ensure that it incorporated both their cultures. “The venue décor colours were gold and ivory with pastel flowers and greenery, with steel blue bridesmaid dresses and navy blue groomsmen suits. “For the décor, we wanted to keep it classic, something that will never go out of style when we look back at our photos in 20 to 30 years,” Ulyana explains.
The couple were married in the Ukrainian Catholic church in celebration of Ulyana’s culture. The priest’s speech at dinner was one of the highlights of the day. “Father Michael, the priest, got to know Leon and I quite well in the four weeks leading up to our wedding,” Ulyana explains. “When he made his speech before dinner, he mixed up Leon’s name and called him Roy. At first people were confused as to who he was talking about, but by the end of the speech everyone realized that he mixed up Leon’s name. For the rest of the evening, everyone referred to Leon as ‘Roy’ in their speeches. It was a very funny and innocent mix up that provided us with jokes for the rest of the evening.”
In a nod to Leon’s Chinese-Canadian culture, the couple had two Chinese lions walk in with them for their grand entrance, while other performers played the drums. After the couple was introduced and seated, a cultural dance was performed to bless the couple for a long and happy marriage. “It is also believed that the Chinese lion dance brings fertility, growth, prosperity and a wish for longetivity,” Ulyana says. “This was a beautiful addition to add to the wedding, and our guests were highly entertained by the performance.”
