A Vintage Summer Wedding in Bay Bulls, Newfoundland

Kayla O'Brien and Kyle Puddester met while working together as chefs in downtown St. John's. The pair dated for three years before opening their own restaurant, Fork, in Witless Bay, Newfoundland. In 2017, Kyle proposed to Kayla on her birthday. They were was married 10 months later.

The couple chose The Bread and Cheese Country Inn as their wedding venue because of its scenic outdoor location tucked alongside the Atlantic Ocean. "We love that we decided on an outdoor venue and stuck with it. It perfectly matched the rustic theme we wanted to achieve," the pair shares. For the bride, maintaining an authentic feel throughout the wedding's décor details was important. "I was envisioning true rustic Newfoundland," Kayla explains. "I find a lot of people who go for a rustic look just end up using lots of burlap and mason jars. I didn't want that kind of rustic." For florals, Kayla chose to incorporate hand-picked Newfoundland wildflowers. "They are absolutely stunning and free, which is a huge bonus for a wedding budget," she says. "Many people see them as weeds but I just love them."

Wanting to keep the wedding as natural-looking as possible, the bride let her bridesmaids pick their own ivory dresses and jewlery. The groomsmen wore the same navy suits, but with personalized accessories as well. "This made the bridal party look like their true selves," Kayla recalls. During the reception, the bride changed into a flannel shirt and jeans. "I just wanted our wedding to genuinely reflect us and it 100% did," Kayla remarks.

The day before the wedding, the couple and their families decorated the entire reception tent by themselves with antique furniture and decorations that Kayla had collected the previous winter. "It was stressful but also so fun. It was lovely to see everything come together like we had envisioned it," she shares. Before the reception, the pig roast for the supper unexpectedly caught fire inside the tent. "Weddings aren't perfect," Kayla notes. "Don't stress over every little detail."
