An Elegant and Romantic Wedding in Niagara-on-the-Lake - Bride and Groom

"'She’s Canadian. He’s Dutch. They met in Sweden and now they’re tying the knot.' That was the short and sweet synopsis of our love story printed on our save-the-date cards, but in reality, there was much more to it than these simple words," Lydia explains. "We met on the dance floor of a nightclub in 2009, and thought we’d never see each other again, but fate had other plans!"

After years of living together overseas, the couple decided it was time to make it official. "I had my engagement ring custom-made by Lyppens, a famous jeweller in Amsterdam. I was very particular about what I wanted (rose gold! cushion cut!), but I wanted everything else to be a surprise. When Erwin finally proposed in a beautiful spot overlooking the ocean in Lisbon, Portugal, I was definitely surprised," says Lydia.

When it came time to plan their wedding, choosing Niagara-on-the-Lake as the destination for their intimate celebration was a no-brainer. "I always wanted to have my wedding in the place where I grew up: Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario. To highlight the Niagara region’s natural beauty for our 35 European guests, Erwin and I chose a gorgeous private estate, with acres of orchards and vineyards, as our venue," she says. "We wanted to show them the best of Niagara, and the setting we chose really delivered."

For the decor, the couple allowed the nature to shine through by keeping the decor neutral and classic. "We opted for a palette of dove grey, cream, blackberry and what I call 'the inside of a fig,' with lots of lush greenery in our bouquets and decor. The understated scheme allowed the natural setting to take centre stage, especially during dinner in the cherry orchard—one of my favourite parts of the day!" Lydia remembers.
