Caitlan and Jay decided early in the wedding planning process that they wanted an intimate, sophisticated, family wedding. "Initially, the front-runner location for the reception was the famous Da Paolino restaurant, shaded by 130 lemon trees, on the Italian island of Capri. We nearly booked our flights, but instead my aunt and uncle generously offered to host the party at their place," Caitlan explains. "We completely fell in love with the idea of getting married in their stunning sun-soaked backyard and having dinner at the same table where we celebrate special holidays and family birthdays."
Caitlan and Jay agree that the venue was the most special part of the day. "The sun setting during the evening backyard ceremony, dinner in the stunning dining room and cutting the cake outside by the light of hundreds of twinkling candles was a dream come true," Caitlan says. "We were so happy that my aunt and uncle offered their home for our wedding—it couldn’t have felt more personal, intimate or full of love."
To help tie in the Italian-inspired theme, the couple had their planner Lidia bring a little bit of Italy to Toronto. "She added potted trees wired with fresh lemons, silver bowls filled with juicy figs and sweet champagne grapes to line the extra-long dinner table. We also chose a lemon cake with fresh lemon curd filling," Caitlan says. "In keeping with the house’s muted colour scheme, we stuck to soft neutrals for the linens, chairs and accessories, and an all-white palette for the flowers."
Another special detail from the day was the headpiece Caitlan wore during the reception. "Right after the ceremony I swapped my veil for a small floral headband of white gardenias and stephanotis. I loved that it included the flowers my mom had worn in her own flower crown and bouquet on my parents’ wedding day," Caitlan says. "Before we left for the honeymoon, I pressed the small arrangement so I could add it to our wedding memory box."
