Mike and Shannon’s New York City engagement happened on their one year anniversary at a Jays vs. Yankees baseball game. “Our first date was in Toronto at a Jays vs. Yankees game, and we thought it would be a great way to celebrate—by re-creating our first date,” Shannon shares. Prior to watching the game, Mike got on one knee and proposed. “It made our game that much more special, and we even caught two game balls, which I like to say was an engagement present from the MLB!”
Their venue, Evergreen Brickworks, initially wasn’t in the running in their selection of locations to host their wedding. “I’ve worked there for the past two and a half years, and I manage the hospitality and events department, which means I’ve seen countless events come and go,” Shannon explains. “Because of that, I thought it wouldn’t be special—but I quickly realized it was quite the opposite. I’ve felt the magic of Evergreen for years, and I couldn’t imagine a more perfect venue for our special day.”
For decor, the couple stuck with neutral colours with lots of greenery. With the lush gardens, colourful graffiti and exposed brick of the venue, they wanted their details to complement the space. “We decided on a playful, yet modern, garden party feel with whitewashed wood tables, rattan chairs and chargers, and lots and lots of greenery accents,” Shannon shares.
The bride and groom stuck with tradition and had their “first look” as Shannon walked down the aisle. “It was probably the only traditional thing we felt strongly about,” she says. “The emotions and energy of that exact moment where we saw each other for the first time, amongst our family and friends, was really a once-in-a-lifetime feeling.”
