College sweethearts Darryl and Jackie both studied industrial engineering at the University of Toronto, and first spoke in their materials science lab class. After 10 years together and countless hours of studying, it makes sense that the historic Canadian university would figure prominently in Darryl's proposal. "We arrived at Queen’s Park and 'casually' sat down together on a park bench," Jackie recalls. "Darryl planted some paparazzi pictures taken by his friends, which was the real surprise!"
Greenery was a key design element used throughout the couple's plant-themed wedding. "Darryl runs a popular Instagram account called @houseplantjournal where he teaches his followers about houseplant care, so we wanted to share this unique passion with our wedding guests," Jackie explains. Together the couple worked with Blush & Bloom to design a foliage-filled backdrop augmented by potted plants from Valleyview Gardens. They also supplied large potted plants, which gave the venue a tropical jungle vibe.
As part of the wedding ceremony, Jackie and Darryl chose to honour their marriage by performing a symbolic unity planting. At the start of the ceremony, each of their mothers carried a spider plant to the altar. "Once we completed the signing, we each removed a spiderette from the mother plants and planted them together in a new pot, signifying the joining of our two lives."
With Darryl on keyboard and Jackie on vocals, the talented couple made their first dance extra special by surprising guests with a performance of Ed Sheeran's “Perfect,” followed by “Something About the Way You Look Tonight” by Elton John. Midway through the second song they introduced the band, Saturday Night Superstars, who continued playing while they had their first dance, then kept the party going well into the night.
