A Paper Crane-Themed Wedding In Vancouver

  |  By Kimberly Aglipay

Shirley and Arthur's first encounter was at a small party hosted by Arthur's brother. "Shirley was a close friend of my sister-in-law," Arthur recalls. "It was a day I worked eight hours, plus had four hours of school, so I dragged my legs into the house and waved at the group of people without paying any attention." It was only later that Arthur's sister-in-law introduced the two. "I came back downstairs in my pyjamas to do my laundry, and that's when my sister-in-law introduced us," Arthur says with a laugh. "That was probably one of my most embarrassing moments, and I panicked, not knowing whether to shake her hand and instantly realized I was in my pyjamas and totally looked unimpressive. You probably can't find a more non-romantic encounter!"

For the wedding, the pair chose to have a paper crane-themed ceremony. "Paper cranes symbolize good luck and long-lasting love, so we thought the theme was romantic and elegant," Shirley shares. "With the cranes hanging from the beautiful tree arch, the venue felt like a lovely enchanted garden. Entering the ceremony by white horse carriage felt like a fairy-tale come true." The theme was complemented by a coral colour scheme with shades of blush, gold and ivory. The main flower throughout the couple's decor was the "free spirit" rose. "Its coral colour worked perfectly, and we thought it was a good representation of my personality," Shirley says. "I really felt like a free-spirited bride wearing a beautiful dress while I was walking down the aisle toward my Mr. Right!"

The dessert table was one of Shirley's favourite details and provided the perfect backdrop for photos.. "We loved the idea that guests could mingle and enjoy some sweets after the ceremony," Shirley says. "Since the wedding was so intimate, this was important!"

After being together for six years, tying the knot was an incredibly precious moment for both Shirley and Arthur. "We talked all the time about promising our lives to each other," Shirley says. "But actually looking into one another's eyes and exchanging vows is a moment I'll never forget."
