Matt and Katie were celebrating Katie's 30th birthday in Chicago when he popped the question. "We walked over to the Cloud Gate in Millennium Park and then to an outdoor amphitheatre that was right beside it," Katie recalls with a smile. "As I looked up at all of the lit up buildings and the city skyline, I commented about how beautiful it was. Matt responded by asking, "well what do you think about this?" I turned around and he was standing there with a ring! I was completely taken aback. It was perfect."
Since Matt is from Prince Edward Island and the couple resides in Ontario, 90 of their wedding guests flew out to the island for the wedding. The wedding theme was modern classic with a maritime charm. "It was really important to us to showcase the island and have a real east coast feel incorporated throughout," Katie explains.
They created a palette of blush, navy, steel blue, and wine complemented with rustic elements throughout, including wooden signs, small branches with green fillers, and brightly-lit candles.
The couple said their vows overlooking the red cliffs of PEI with the Northumberland Strait in the background. "We were blessed with the most absolute perfect weather. It was a quintessential late summer PEI day!" Katie says.
To pay further homage to the island, they included an illustrated map of PEI on the invites, served an oyster shucker at cocktail hour, and hosted an east coast kitchen party the night before the wedding.
For their first dance, the couple chose "Lucky Man" by The Verve. "Matt played me this song when we first met and I always associate it with the beginning of our relationship alongside other countless memories," Katie shares. "Towards the end of our first dance, the band changed the lyrics from 'I'm a lucky man' to 'Matt's a lucky man.' It was a really cute."
