Mani Jassal's Boho, Beachy Engagement Party in Caledon, Ontario

Mani Jassal's fiancé, Hark, proposed to the designer in Tulum, Mexico. The location became the inspiration for the couple's incredible, elaborate engagement, held at the barn on Hark's Caledon, Ontario property. "We wanted our celebration to be very boho and eclectic," Mani says. "We asked all of the ladies attending to wear white, and all the gentlemen to wear florals or linens—we wanted them to feel like they were on a beach!"
The bride designed her own outfit, as well as her groom's outfit. "The top was an elevated version of one of my original bustiers, with a pouf sleeve detail. Instead of wearing a traditional dupatta (his parents were already going to gift me one), I opted for a light pink tulle cape that dragged in the back," Mani explains. "This was also the first time I designed Indian evening wear for mens as well for Hark. I wanted him to wear something with similar embroidery as mine, so we went with a 'lucknovi' fabric, and I did the sleeves with my signature hierarchy style."
The bridesmaids wore extra-special outfits as well, from Mani's new Tulum collection which was recently released this week—the perfect ensembles for the occasion. "I hought it would be a nice way to preview the new collection in a real-life context," Mani shares. "Although clothing looks great walking down the runway, but truth be told these clothes are meant to be worn to occasions like this, meant to be move in and dance the night away in."
Mani and Hark's engagement party included some traditional Punjabi ceremonies such as the "Koormai" ceremony, where the bride's parents gift the groom-to-be, and the "Chunni" ceremony, where the groom's parents gift the bride-to-me. "The celebration wasn't originally going to be as elaborate as it became—it turned into a "go big or go home!" situation," Mani laughs.
The couple's 200 guests were treated to a special Wake and Bake Pop-Up Bakery, an amazing dessert spread by Mani's sister Simmy Jassal, a baker. A vintage Volkswagon photobooth was also on hand for guests to take photos. One special element was the dupatta that Hark's parents gifted Mani. "It had the lyrics of 'So Into You' by Tamia embroidered on it, along with our names and engagement date," Mani recalls. "We had a fireworks show at the end of the party, around 10pm—it was so magical!"
