Elie and Vasilios have known each other since they were kids. "The Greek community in Windsor isn't very big, so we would see a lot of each other in our younger years at church, Greek school and Greek dance class," Elie shares. Over the years, the pair lost touch until Elie's final year at school in London, Ontario, when she spotted Vasilios on Facebook. "After adding him, we were talking everyday," Elie says. "After graduation, when I moved back home for the summer, we went on our first date. It lasted about 12 hours, and when it was over I knew he was the man I would one day marry."
Having their November wedding day be a gorgeous 19 degrees and sunny was completely unexpected. The couple returned to their hometown of Windsor to get married at the Greek Orthodox church they grew up attending. Before the ceremony, the bride and groom took photos with their wedding party, a decision that proved to be a good one. "Having a small group of people support us was perfect," Elie remarks. "It was so calm and stress-free!"
The couple wanted their wedding to feel romantic, with a timeless, classic feel. Soft colours combined with a neutral palette of white, cream and gold set the stage for an elegant affair. "I love the clean and warm look it gave to our venue," Elie says.
Elie says the crowning ceremony was a highlight of their day. "During a Greek Orthodox wedding, a crown is placed on the heads of the bride and groom, and a ribbon attaches the two headpieces," she explains. "The crowns symbolize the honour of marriage, and the ribbon symbolizes the union of a new family." Elie and Vasilios made sure to tell the best man, who was purchasing the stefana, that they wanted something simple and less glitzy that most traditional ones. "He had them made of olive branches and flowers--they were amazing!"
