Stephanie and Aaron met in a beginner chemistry class at the University of Alberta. "A friend introduced us, and we remained acquaintances," Stephanie recalls. A year later in another chemistry class, the acquaintances became close friends and study buddies, and eventually a relationship blossomed.
The couple got engaged on a vacation in Maui, Hawaii. As far as Stephanie knew, the trip to this scenic island was to celebrate Aaron's birthday. One night before dinner the lovebirds decided to watch the sunset at La Perouse Bay. "I wanted to do this on the trip because there are nocturnal dolphins that swim out to the ocean right around sunset," she says. Stephanie and Aaron took turns taking photos of each other at the scenic location. When Stephanie had her back turned, Aaron went down on one knee a proposed.
When it came to planning their wedding, Stephanie and Aaron wanted their celebration to have a traditional, timeless feel. Their wedding theme was inspired by the iconic fashions of Kate Spade—a style that matched Stephanie's own personal aesthetic. "Kate Spade always has such fun, playful and whimsical designs all while keeping things classy," Stephanie explains. The colour palette the couple selected included black, ivory, gold, pink and shades of peach. "The mix of black and gold accents really tied everything together nicely," she says. "It really was pure magic seeing all of the flower arrangements for the first time and hearing from our friends and family how much they enjoyed them."
One of the standout moments for the couple was seeing the venue with all their colours, decor, family and friends. Jennifer from Akiko Floral brought the couple's flower decor to life. "She really knew how to guide me through it and pick some amazing blooms," Stephanie shares. The flowers give a beautiful contrast to the squared wedding arch, which was custom-made by the maid of honour and the maid's brother. "We ended up leaving the arch for the reception since it doubled as a bonus photo spot," Stephanie explains.
Another of the the bride's favourites was her gown—a combination of separates by BHLDN. She says the dress came together beautifully and was amazingly comfy. "It was short at the front to show off my heels, but had a bit of a train to still look very romantic," Stephanie explains. "It also had pockets, which everyone knows is ideal for the wedding day."
