A Garden Party Wedding In Ottawa

For their wedding, Kate and Doug didn't have a particular theme; instead their goal was to enhance the natural surroundings of the private residence in Ottawa that they chose for their venue. "We aimed for simple, ethereal beauty with as many fairy lights as possible," Kate explains. "We decided to enhance the landscape’s natural beauty with muted floral arrangements, old Persian rugs, tiki lamps and wood accents wherever we could fit them in."

One of their favourite details was their clock guestbook--a gorgeous piece of furniture that they were able to use after their wedding. "It hangs on a wall in our house and is a daily reminder of the amazing day we had with family and friends," Kate says.

With Doug being from the U.K., the couple paid special attention to out of town guests to ensure they had everything they needed. "We scheduled pick-up and drop-off times, had drinks available immediately upon arrival and hot towels to freshen up before dinner," Kate says. "We received great feedback and appreciation for those thoughtful, little touches."

For music, Kate and Doug hired a local British pop cover band. "There is nothing like live music to produce an amazing atmosphere and encourage everyone to join in the fun," Kate says. "The band kept the party going until the wee hours of the night."

One memorable moment was the couple's first dance. "Doug is not a natural dancer by any means, so I was in shock when he agreed to learn a routine for the occasion--no one at the wedding expected that from him," Kate recalls. "It was such a lovely moment that concluded with Doug wiping out on the dace floor mid-twirl. Everyone got up on their feet—what a way to start the party!"
