When it came time to plan their wedding, Fiona and Ravi knew they wanted family to be the overarching theme. When it came time to translating that into decor and invitations, they used their parents' favourite flower, white orchids, as a focal point. "They are so classic and elegant, and our parents have many of these in their homes," Fiona explains. Their two-day celebration involved both Hindu, Chinese and Western ceremonies with different colour palettes. For their Hindu ceremony, red and gold were the dominant colours. "With this being a culture fusion wedding, since Ravi is Guyanese and I'm Chinese, these colours symbolize good luck and fortune in our colours," Fiona says.
Family also played a special role in the couple's wedding invitations. "My sister and brother-in-law designed our invitations and other stationery items including our menu and place cards," Fiona says. "They captured exactly what we wanted--classic elegance and incorporated the orchid perfectly."
As a special treat for their guests, Fiona's mother started the reception off by playing a few songs on the GuZheng, a Chinese instrument. "It was a true gift to us, and it amazed some of our guests as it was the first time some of them had seen this type of instrument," Fiona says.
To pay special homage to their parents for their love and support, in addition to their wedding cake, the couple had two cakes symbolizing each set of parents. "When we were about to cut our cake, we actually called our parents up to cut the cake with them and feed them a piece," Fiona recalls. "It was truly a special moment between the six of us."
