It was in 2007 that Carol Lau and Truman Wong first met at the church they both attended. Seven years later, Truman proposed to Carol during a cruise to Bermuda. “It happened one night when I had trouble opening the door to our cabin. Truman opened the door, and to my surprise, he was all dressed up,” Carol recalls with a smile. “He started singing a song, led me to the balcony and asked me to marry him. The plan all along was for me to eventually open the door myself and find him in the room, but Truman accidentally locked it from the inside!”
Considering they had family in several different countries, a destination wedding was always in the cards for the couple. “We thought it would be wonderful to gather friends and family for a getaway somewhere in Asia,” Carol explains. “We finally decided on Bali, Indonesia because of its beautiful scenery, great accommodations and how amazing the weddings there always look.”
The pair knew one detail they really wanted for their wedding was to include as many flowers as possible. “We love flowers and greenery, and Bali is absolutely stunning with amazing landscapes, so we wanted to include as much of Bali’s beautiful outdoor elements inside the venue as well,” Carol shares. “We wanted an elegant look to the wedding day, but also wanted it to be cheerful and represent fun and joy.”
A favourite moment for Carol happened on the morning of the wedding, before the ceremony when she first saw Truman. “We hugged, and I swear I saw tears in his eyes. I couldn’t believe I was going to become his wife, and he was going to be my husband,” she remembers.
Friends and family from Toronto, New York, Melbourne, Taiwan and Hong Kong gathered in the Infinity Chapel of the Conrad Bali resort to watch the couple say, “I do.” The chapel’s location right on the water made for a dazzling balloon-release photo op, followed by a canopy-covered lunchtime reception. “I really loved how we were able to use all the outdoor and indoor spaces at Conrad Bali,” Carol notes.

Stepping into the Kecak Ballroom for the reception was a moment of truth for the bride and groom, who had only seen the space once before. “It was hard to visualize without seeing everything in person beforehand,” Carol admits. “But it turned out so much better than I could have ever imagined.” A lush green floral wall adorned with a “Carol and Truman” decal served as the backdrop for the head table, which was lined with stunning blue and blush blooms. Gorgeous stems hung from the ceiling above every inch of the space, and gold candelabra centrepieces topped with flowers stood in the middle of each table.
Guests enjoyed dinner and surprise performances by Carol, who played the piano, and Truman, who performed a dance routine with his groomsmen. The celebrations continued with many guests spending time with the couple in Bali after the wedding. “We are blessed to have so many family and friends who were able to fly in from all over the world to be with us,” Carol affirms. “We are grateful they’ll be a part of our memories forever.”
