Janna and Jason were engaged at a restaurant in Toronto where you dine in the dark. "Between the appetizer and main courses, Jason had the restaurant play one of our favourite Prince songs," Janna explains. "I couldn’t see a thing, but I felt Jason take my hand and slip a ring on my finger. He asked me to marry him, and I didn’t have to see the ring to say yes!"
For their wedding, the couple opted to forgo a bridal party, so that freed them up to embrace a broad colour palette. "We asked Fiona, our florist at Stemz, to incorporate as much colour as possible without it looking wrong," Janna says. "I wanted a really rich, vibrant palette for the flowers. The results were amazing and beyond anything we could have imagined." Their bright, colourful floral arrangements and table setting inspired the menus and the couple's wedding stationery.
One of Janna's favourite details was her stunning backless beaded dress. "While dress shopping, I felt like I was looking for a unicorn of a wedding dress," she says with a laugh. "I wanted something sheath and not strapless, embellished but not sparkly or with lace, but still sophisticated and comfortable." As soon as she spotted Lee Petra Grebenau’s Ruby dress on Instagram, she knew it was the one.
The bride and groom also ensured they had an epic sweet table for their guests. "We asked our wedding coordinator, Ashley, to pick the best sweets of all the weddings she’s done," Janna explains. "In addition to our wedding cake we had mini cheesecakes, butter tarts, Turkish delights, and mini milkshakes with freshly baked cookies. We also loved the meringue towers, dark chocolate truffles and printed sugar cookies that Bobbette & Belle created for us."
When they shattered the glass under the chuppah, Janna says she felt all the stress of planning shatter as well. "We were able to simply enjoy being married, surrounded by our families and our closest friends," Janna recalls. "It felt wonderful to hear someone say 'Mr. and Mrs. Appleby' for the first time."
