An Elegant Winter Wedding in Calgary, Alberta

  |   By Lisa Perri

While Jewely and Nadir’s wedding had winter wonderland feel, their engagement was more of the tropical variety. During a vacation in Mexico, Nadir told Jewely he was taking a meeting with a hotel rep, which was not unusual since he worked for an airline. Upon his return, Nadir told Jewely he had arranged dinner reservations for that evening.  “As we got ready for dinner, I was completely oblivious to his nervousness – I though he was sweating from the heat!” laughs Jewely.

As the couple headed out towards the restaurant where they were supposed to have dinner, they came across a table set up on the beach -- a surprise for Jewely to make up for her low-key birthday the month before. As they enjoyed the delicious meal, surrounded by stunning ocean views, Nadir got down on one knee and asked Jewely to be his wife. “Nadir, always trying to be funny, did it with a candy ring pop! He asked if it would do until we got home to shop for a ring. When I said yes, he added, ‘I guess you don’t want this one!’ and pulled out a beautiful diamond engagement ring,” recalls Jewely.  The duo celebrated by watching fireworks and sharing a bottle of champagne on the balcony of their hotel room.

For their snowy nuptials, Jewely and Nadir created a cozy, romantic ambiance with a colour palette of red, black and white. The reception decor was inspired by their winter theme, decked out with branch-filled centerpieces, rose petals and the soft, intimate glow of tea lights.

Knowing both Jewely and Nadir were fans of the TV show Glee, their wedding party recreated the show's version of “Marry You” for the wedding reception entrance, which was one of Jewely's favourite moments.

Nadir and Jewely honeymooned in two spots – spending a week each in Maui and Jamaica. Jewely Walton and Nadir Sunay, January 21, 2012, Calgary, Alberta.
