On their fifth anniversary of meeting as classmates at Brock University, Derek surprised Melissa with a trip to New York City – he even arranged for Melissa to have time off from work without her knowing! On their first night in the romantic city, Derek popped the question.
The couple opted for an intimate ceremony, with only their wedding party, parents and grandparents in attendance to witness their exchanging of vows. “We had two of the groomsmen play guitar during the entrance and signing, which was very personal and special,” says Melissa.
Afterwards, the couple continued their celebrations at the gorgeous Archeo Trattoria in downtown Toronto’s historic Distillery District, where they were joined by extended family and friends. The venue’s industrial charm was accented by whimsical details such as a cupcake and candy laden sweet table and a bold colour palette of yellow and black. The couple worked their striking colour palette into everything from the bouquets and table decor to the bridesmaids' shoes.
Melissa and Derek added to their unique celebration by choosing a non-traditional wedding song, Joel Plaskett’s “I’m Yours.” “We wanted something that was by an artist we actually listen to, with lyrics that were light-hearted,” explains Melissa.
