A Stunning Destination Wedding in Montego Bay, Jamaica

  |  By Alexandria Maiato

Bride and Groom

When Laura left her home in Mexico to come to Canada as an international student, she immediately got a job as a server at a Salvadorian restaurant. Not two weeks after she arrived, Arthur walked into the restaurant as a patron. It was love at first sight. He kept going back to the same restaurant every day for weeks until he finally worked up the nerve to ask her out.

The couple attended a friends wedding in Jamaica a few years prior to their own engagement and had such a lovely time that they agreed they would have their own destination wedding on the beautiful island someday. On April 6, 2013, Laura and Arthur exchanged vows in Montego Bay, Jamaica, in a gazebo overlooking the ocean.

The inspiration for the wedding was "heaven." Arthur, who is a professional saxophonist turned wedding planner, came up with the concept. He did all of the planning and the only input the bride had was that she wanted a lot of baby's breath. Arthur made sure to incorporate Laura's only request into all aspects of the wedding, including baby's breath pew markers, boutonnières, corsages, and table decor. The entire resort had a Greco-Roman feel -- everything was open air with giant pillars everywhere. It fit the "heaven" theme perfectly.

One highlight of the day included the bride's Mexican relatives and groom's Jewish family coming together for the first time. "We had never been all together before," Arthur explains. "It was truly a special moment."

Since he is also a professional musician, Arthur thought it would be fitting that he serenade his wife on their wedding day. "I wanted it to be a surprise so I rented a saxophone from a local musician who brought it to the resort for me," Arthur explains. "During our cocktail hour we had an amazing jazz band. I disappeared for a moment from our cocktail reception and walked back in playing the sax (which turned out to be a gorgeous silver saxophone). I played “One Love” by Bob Marley and couple jazz standards."
