A Modern, Minimalist Wedding In Toronto

For Jen and Andrew, the goal for their wedding was to evoke a certain mood, instead of sticking with a specific theme. "I went with an organic, mixed palette," Jen explains. "I wanted to incorporate modern, minimalist touches instead of being locked in a colour scheme with matchy-matchy everything." The bridesmaid dresses in soft, airy hues of blues and greys complemented the decor, which was white, grey and black with hints of mauve, blush pink and teal green.

The ceremony included a special piece of decor purchased for that day. "Inspired by the tradition of Moroccan wedding blankets, we chose a special rug to stand on during the ceremony," Jen explains. "Along with doubling as decor, it serves as a memento for us to remember our special day--as long as we keep the rug, we will always have the spot we were married on wherever we go!" Exchanging nuptials was the couple's favourite moment of the day. "Walking down the aisle into a room filled with all the people I love most in the world to profess my love and commitment to my new husband was an overwhelmingly beautiful moment," Jen says. "As predicted, I fought back tears through most of it."

After the ceremony, guests made their way into the reception. Jen had DIYed the reception table runners by hand-cutting and hand-dying over 150 feet of muslin fabric. She also designed the seating chart, place cards and menus. "I was really proud of how they turned out," she remarks. The reception tables featured centrepieces with the bride's favourite flowers such as lilacs and anemones from Minim Designs. Jen admits she also spent months sourcing matte, minimalist bud vases to fill with sculptural stems and foliage.

Toward the end of the evening, the couple's photographer, Scarlet O'Neill, led them out for a stroll to Yonge and Dundas for an incredible photo-op at the four-way cross intersection. "When the traffic lights turned red, we ran out into the middle of the crowded intersection and kissed while she snapped away," Jen says. "People all around started cheering, and cars honked their horns. It was amazing to feel as if in the middle of downtown Toronto, in one of the country's busiest intersections, time stopped, just for us."
