A Fun Vintage Wedding In Kleinberg, Ontario

A wedding full of pastel colour was exactly what Rachael Dankiw envisioned for her big day the minute Joseph Montemarano, her boyfriend of four years, popped the question. “I went in wanting a rainbow of colours,” Rachael laughs. “Joseph and I agreed on a range of muted pastels—green, yellow, pink, blue and purple.”

With a spirited palette in hand the next big task was finding ways to include them in their party. “I was all over the map with ideas,” Rachael admits. “I came across an assortment of pastel buttons and doilies in my search for inspiration, and that was what sparked the idea of a day full of vintage touches.”

While the couple decided on an over-the-top reception decked in colour and whimsy, they started their wedding day with a simple and traditional ceremony at St. Padre Pio Church in Kleinburg, Ontario. “For me, the church was my most memorable moment,” Joseph confides. “Seeing Rachael in her dress for the first time is something I’ll never forget.”

The couple and their 280 guests travelled from the church to the Riviera Parque Dining, Banquet & Convention Centre where the space had been transformed into a wedding wonderland. “Originally I wanted a backyard wedding but I was scared it would thunderstorm,” Rachael explains. “The hall we chose was the place where all three of Joseph’s brothers got married. It was ideal for our large guest list but didn’t fit the bill in terms of what our vision was—it was a bit of a challenge to dress the space.”

The couple successfully created their dream-day vision with the help of wedding designer Rachel Clingen. Linens and drapery were used to create a more intimate atmosphere, and dinner tables were topped with vintage blue fabrics and lace overlays. Beautiful floral arrangements created in Sophie Conran jugs, and bird-shaped table numbers, also accentuated the duo’s off-beat vibe; as did the antique furnishings they painted and the amazing Mason jar chandelier created by the groom.

“All our friends and family were wowed when they walked into the room,” Rachael recalls. “They kept coming up to tell us how beautiful everything looked and how they’ve never seen anything like it.”

What the couple’s guests didn’t realize was the sweetest part was yet to come in the incredible dessert stations, which had not been unveiled. “We knew what type of treats and candy we were serving, but it was the sweet company who came in and did all the setup in the foyer for us.” Rachael confirms. “When we saw it for the first time I was freaking out—it was so amazing!”

Mini-cakes, doughnuts, French macarons, cake pops, popcorn, a pumpkin-flavoured wedding cake and a cotton candy machine were just a few of the delicious highlights. “The dance floor was only half-full at one point as everyone was eating at the candy tables,” Rachael laughs. “It was an amazing way to finish the evening.”
