A DIY Vintage Wedding In Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan

  |   By Jen O'Brien

Amber and Josh, who met in high school, both admit to having secret crushes on each other growing up but the pair didn't actually become a couple until the night of Amber's 26th birthday. Fast-forward two years: a few weeks had passed since Amber's 28th birthday and Josh revealed that he had a late present to give to Amber. "I was excited and surprised as Josh handed me a handcrafted card that described a blissful weekend away in Victoria, BC," explains Amber. "When we arrived in Victoria I instantly fall in love with the place," says Amber. Josh had planned a kayak trip to a tiny private island where the couple enjoyed a picnic taking in the beautiful scenery. "Close to the end of our picnic Josh said he had one more surprise," explains Amber. "He handed me yet another handcrafted card that was somehow more beautiful than the first! As I read the card I began to get butterflies. At the bottom right corner of it, it said 'Stand and Open'. As I stood and opened the card, it transformed into a box with the most amazing ring suspended in the middle of it!! Josh got down on one knee and asked me to marry him!"

After returning from Victoria the couple began planning a DIY vintage wedding complete with homemade favours, a vintage Volkswagen bus to transport the wedding party and ceremony decor, which featured hundreds of paper lanterns assembled and hung by friends and family. "There was a moment amidst the bustle of the evening when Josh and I walked back into our venue and the beauty of all our hard work became euphoric," says Amber. "I was stuck in a moment of surrealism; the paper lanterns were glowing from the ambient lights, marshmallows were roasting over the crackling wood fire, and the guests were laughing and dancing. It was a sight of pure, unaltered joy and beauty."
