This Might Just Be The Most Romantic Island Chain In The Caribbean

Unhurried luxury awaits at the very bottom of the Grenadine island chain. So, too, do lush forest gardens, breathtaking walks up rainforest mountains, serene sails through tranquil bays, rum cocktails on the beach, and the freshest chocolate you will ever taste.

With few high rises and less development, Grenada still manages to possess the island charm that can seem slightly manufactured elsewhere. You enjoy the natural beauty simply because it is all around you.

Nicknamed the Spice Island due to the plethora of nutmeg, cinnamon, cloves, ginger and turmeric grown here, Grenada boasts white sand beaches, multiple hiking trails and gorgeous waterfalls in its lush rainforests. Here are some of the best honeymoon claims to fame the island has to offer for your to-do list.

Luxuriate in the longest swimming pool in the Caribbean Opened in November 2018 on Grenada’s Grand Anse, the sublime Silversands Grenada is proving a fast favourite with the “in” crowd. Designed by French firm AW2 with the international jet-set circuit in mind, the minimalist 43-suite, nine-villa hotel is a sea of tranquility, its blond wood, neutral tones and pale marble buoyed by exquisite furniture from Spanish architect Patricia Urquiola. The Silversands Spa offers locally inspired treatments, sauna, hammam and pool, plus a high-tech fitness centre. With a rum and cigar lounge, a beach club and two restaurants, the Silversands is destined for the society pages. Make it your home base for at least a couple of honeymoon days, if only to just sit quietly by the 100-metre pool.

Take a sunset cruise on a handmade wooden sailboat Set sail in the late afternoon on a cruise along Grenada’s southwestern coastline in a traditional, handmade wooden boat and cast your minds adrift, rum punch in hand. The quiet contemplation that only a silent sail on a windy day can bring is truly time well spent in Grenada. Danny and the team at Savvy Sailing Adventure can take you out for a sunset cruise, a half-day snorkel, a day trip up Grenada’s west coast or a two-day cruise to the Grenadines and back, with private charters also available. There’s nothing quite like gazing at paradise from the water while connecting with the island’s nautical heritage.

Snorkel or scuba dive through the Underwater Sculpture Park The world’s first underwater sculpture park, featuring works created by British sculptor Jason deCaires Taylor, is a stunner even for the most jaded of undersea adventurers. Located within Molinere Beauséjour Marine Protected Area, these concrete sculptures attract an array of marine life. Of the original sculptures, all anywhere from four to seven metres, "Vicissitudes," a chain of children holding hands in a circle, is the most impressive. “The Lost Correspondent” features a man working at his desk on a typewriter, nestled in a small gully that acts as his “office.” Of Grenada’s 30 reefs and 15 wrecks to visit, the Sculpture Park is one of the best. The top underwater outfit on the island is Aquanauts Grenada, who offer daily scuba and snorkel trips from two bases—one at Spice Island Beach Resort on the Grand Anse and the other on the southern coast of the island at True Blue Bay Resort.

Relax with a Balinese couples massage One of the more secluded and seductive spots on the island is also one of its most rejuvenating. Even if you’re not staying at Laluna Boutique Beach Hotel and Villas, stop in for a massage at their world-class Asian spa, with masseuses melting away cares with Eastern massage techniques. The spa features a couples room, a Tatami room for stronger massages executed on the floor and change rooms with outdoor showers. The adjacent yoga pavilion is the epitome of serenity if you fancy a good stretch. If you stick around for dinner, the resort’s casual Italian-Caribbean cuisine is terrific—but be sure to have the Rumtini cocktail first.

Get away from it all where the Caribbean Sea and Atlantic Ocean meet A few days at the very top of Grenada on the north coast reveals a completely different island vibe—relaxed and authentic. Check into Petite Anse Hotel near the town of Sauteurs for a little hammock time stretched out in front of one of the best views on the entire island. Hosts Philip and Annie Clift have developed the perfect romantic escape with their 11 cottage-style rooms. The restaurant is one of the best in the area, so you get to rub elbows with the locals and the resident pets are beyond adorable—including Darius the donkey. Bonus: Bring your running clothes. Philip co-hosts a weekly community run that draws 200 people every Saturday.
