Malta may seem an unexpected choice for a honeymoon but with beautiful beaches, a thriving wine industry and cities brimming with historical monuments, this southern European country smack dab in the middle of the Mediterranean is actually the perfect place for a romantic getaway.
Valletta, the island republic's capital city, was declared a UNESCO world heritage site in 1980 and with 320 monuments it is one of the most concentrated historic areas in the world. Malta has been home to Phoenicians, Greeks, Carthaginians, Romans, Byzantines, Arabs as well as the Order of the Knights of St. John and renaissance architecture is still visible throughout the city, which has undergone few modifications since the Knights of St. John left in the late 1700s.
