Sometimes the best celebrations are entirely spontaneous.
Peter, who is from Belfast, met Caitlin, a Vancouverite, in Ireland and together they moved to British Columbia after Peter was offered a job in Vancouver as an art director. Fast forward two years. After purchasing a home together in Port Moody, the couple planned an epic road trip across the south-western United States.
After flying into Las Vegas, Peter and Caitlin picked up a rental car then began their adventure. The first stop was the Grand Canyon, then Lake Havasu in Arizona. The couple continued on across the Californian border to Joshua Tree National Park then onward to Los Angeles.
During a night out in Hollywood the couple decided to get engaged and tie the knot in secret during their trip. The deal was sealed the next day when they spotted an amazing vintage ring for Caitlin in a store in L.A. Peter and Caitlin continued their trip up the Californian coast to Atascadero then to Santa Cruz and San Jose. In San Jose Peter Googled "How to get married in San Francisco" and booked an appointment at city hall the following day (which also happened to be Caitlin's birthday!)
As their impromptu wedding day arrived the couple headed to city hall expecting the ceremony to be over in a matter of minutes. Instead the judge officiated the ceremony as if he were speaking in front of an audience. "We had no witness so I had to run into the hallway and grab a guy. A complete stranger named Mike (...or was it Mark...or Steve?) signed our papers and disappeared to some other wedding. I think I have a photo of his shoulder to remember him by," jokes Peter.
Right after they said their "I dos" the couple headed to a tattoo shop. "I was dead set against a ring and got a tattoo instead," explains Peter. "As I'm a designer, it's an uppercase 'O' from my favourite font, avant garde." Afterwards, the couple returned to their hotel and called Caitlin's mom to tell her that they had just tied the knot. "It turns out we got married on our honeymoon," says Peter.
