What A Party

  |  By Alison McGill
What A Party

There have been more than a few major Royal Weddings in London before, but never has there been one as grand as William and Catherine's. It's estimated that two million people took to the streets to celebrate the newly anointed Duke and Duchess' wedding day and being in the city to experience such history is something I will never forget. There were big screens set up EVERYWHERE so everyone could watch; there were street parties; there were people gathered from around the world, camping outside Westminster Abbey and Buckingham Palace, some for as long as three days before the event! The energy was electric and the entire city was definitely in the mood for a fairytale romance, which is exactly what Catherine and William gave us and shared with the world on their grand, but yet very intimate wedding day. Some of my Royal Wedding highlights:

- the gasps and tears when the crowds first glimpsed Catherine in that glorious Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen dress. It was perfect in every way and a dress that will transcend over time and instantly enter royal and fashion history. - the city erupting in one loud cheer the moment Catherine said "I Will," and the pair officially became man and wife. - the crowds going absolutely mad when William and Catherine's carriage rolled by. This is the moment so many had waited for. - the double kiss on the balcony. That's what we wanted to see and we got our wish not once but twice. Can we talk about those cheekbones? What a beautiful pair! - the party that just didn't stop. Crowds lingered well into the wee hours outside of Buckingham Palace celebrating the night away. This was definitely one party that everyone was invited to. The wedding was full of so many special moments, but my personal favourite came on the morning after the wedding while standing at Buckingham Palace to watch the changing of the guard. The crowds were thick, but I had staked a spot front and centre peering between the wrought iron fence waiting for the spectacle to begin. In an instant, a helicopter appeared from inside the palace courtyard and flew right over my head...it was William & Kate, on their way to a private honeymoon retreat somewhere in the UK before William heads back to work next week. I didn't know it was them at the time, but had a feeling–the timing just seemed right. Of course, I gave them my best royal wave.
