Move over Jennifer and Justin. As of last night the most talked about celebrity engagement is Avril Lavigne and Nickelback’s Chad Kroeger. Who knew they were dating let alone knew each other?! The couple reportedly fell for each other in February while Chad was working with Avril on some songs for her new album. The thing that had us seeing stars was of course Avril’s whopping 14-carat pear shape engagement ring—that is some big love Chad!
We just had to get a professional’s take on this impressive bling so we called one of Toronto’s glitziest jewelers Myles Mindham who told us the size of the rock is definitely an expression of the love Chad feels for Avril. “The stone Chad chose for Avril is a very rare one in terms of the size and shape,” Mindham shares. “He obviously feels Avril is a rare love and wanted to express that with the engagement ring.” To give you some perspective on the dimensions of Avril’s diamond, Mindham says it would be about the size of a nickel (of course!). As for cost, that is all dependent on the quality of the stone, but Mindham says the minimum price tag for an engagement ring like Avril's would be $500,000, but it’s more than likely in the range of a cool million.
“This is a lot of ring and I’m curious to how much we will see Avril out and about with it,” Mindham says. “I’m sure Chad wants her to wear it everyday but the question will be if she is comfortable doing that.” According to Mindham, a one- or two-carat sparkler is what most women feel comfortable with for daily wear. He says three carats or more starts to become a little showy and not something for everyday, but instead more of a cocktail or special occasion piece. When we asked him to recall another notable super-sized engagement ring of late, Mindham picks Kim Kardashian’s 22-carat emerald-cut diamond as a standout. “I wonder where that is now?” he laughs.
Because Avril Lavigne's engagement ring is so grand, Mindham says when she and Chad do say ‘I do,’ she will likely have to wear her wedding band on the right hand. “There will be no room on her ring finger!” he says. “I’d like to see her wear something micro-pave on her right ring finger.”
