Calling all brides-to-be (and non-brides) you've got to check out the latest cupcakery to hit the streets of Toronto: Prairie Girl Bakery. Owned by Jean Blacklock, Prairie Girl is exactly what cupcakes are, and should be, all about: sweet and simple–no extra fuss on the side.
Borrowing inspiration from her mom's icing, Jean stresses her love for butter and cream cheese, "creaming the butter and/or cream cheese 'til they're nice and fluffy is what it's all about," Jean explains. As for the cupcake flavours? Well, this cupcakery certainly has all the classics covered from vanilla to chocolate to red velvet to the more exotic flavours including coconut lime and hazelnut mousse."We always say red velvet, strawberry and peanut butter are the favourite flavours, but lately I've noticed that every single one of our 14 flavours and our 'Treats of the Week' are beloved in a fanatical way by some segment of our customers," Jean says. And, not only does this bakeshop strive on flavours, but their number one motto is 'customers leave the store, or finish their cupcakes, happier than before'. How's that for service? You only have to read their testimonial page to see just exactly how phenomenal and friendly the staff really is. Lastly, and probably the best part about Prairie Girl is their commitment and service to the community. "We bake fresh every day, and all our leftovers are donated right away to Second Harvest," Jean stresses. "So I think our commitment to baking the old-fashioned way as well as a team who always smiles is what sets us apart from the rest."
