Play that Funky Music

  |  By Alison McGill

Want to make your party one they’ll never forget? It’s all about the music—our picks for the best wedding playlists.

When it comes to your reception, it’s probably not the song for your first dance you’ll labour over, but what comes next. Like most couples, you probably have “your song,” that special one that holds a dear place in both your hearts. The one where you realized it was true love…but enough waxing poetic about romance, the real challenge you’re going to have with your wedding dance party is putting together a DJ set that will get everyone footloose and fancy-free.

Speaking of footloose, we all know the standard wedding fare: “Footloose,” “Old Time Rock and Roll,” “The Macarena.” Yes, these ones do get the guests up and toe tapping, but they are also so predictable. I asked some of the Weddingbells edit team for their “Top 10s,” 10 songs they love; new, old, fast, slow; ones they’ve heard at previous parties that were total crowd-pleasers. Including my own picks, here are our top five, top ten countdowns!

1. My picks:
• “Rio,” Duran Duran
• “Pride (In the Name of Love),” U2
• “Freedom 90,” George Michael

• “Another One Bites the Dust,” Queen
• “Comfortably Numb,” Scissor Sisters
