Owners Krista Robertson and Aynsley Rosin started their bakery, Sweet Impressions, nearly a decade ago in a tiny shop in Winnipeg’s French Quarter. Today, they run an impressive, totally nut-free operation in River Heights, with a storefront, massive kitchen, studio for baking classes and dedicated wedding section for presentations and consultations. In addition to elaborate cakes, they also create custom cookie favours, edible place cards, and—our current sweet table obsession—perfectly symmetrical doughnut walls.
When they started making doughnuts, the pair brainstormed ways to display them as beautifully as possible. “We wanted something freestanding, pretty and simple at the same time, so clients could seamlessly incorporate them into their wedding style,” says Robertson. The result are totally personalized walls that double as pieces of wedding-day décor, with pops of greenery, fresh flowers and pretty bows surrounding a grid of delicious doughnuts—which are hand-decorated using each couple’s preferred colour scheme, finished in a metallic sheen and come in flavours like red velvet, salted caramel and pumpkin spice (made fresh from Manitoba pumpkins). The walls themselves can be rented for $150, or couples can opt for the super-popular “Doughnut Shoppe Dessert Table” for $799, which comes with a two-tier wedding cake, two doughnut walls, extra doughnuts for the table and on-site styling services.
