The Disney/Pixar film Coco was a production brimming with vibrant rich colours, personality and heart. It served as the creative inspiration for this styled shoot by Maureen Im Photography. “The first time I watched Disney’s Coco, I was blown away,” Im says. “It follows the story of a young boy named Miguel who on Día de Muertos embarks on a journey to learn the true story of his family, and in the end, learns the value and true meaning of what it means to be a family. Not only was the story and overall message of the movie very heartwarming and real, but I was also inspired and moved by the juxtaposition of the rich colours against the darkness and how it helped show the whimsy and vibrancy of the Land of the Dead.”
For the shoot Im shares the create team shot two different looks with colour, contrast, and the mix of traditional and modern being the focal point. Florals create an explosion of colour with both looks (colourful florals are a key 2021 trend in our Wedding Trends Guide). A white gown and black gown create two very different beautiful and edgy bridal looks. The traditional white gown was paired with a classic lace-trimmed veil and a more modern gold hair piece by Blair Nadeau (the designer also created a black veil to add an element of drama and elegance to the moodier look). All paper goods were designed, created, and calligraphed by Sarah Kim of Selah Paper who beautifully incorporated the floral theme and pops of colour in the design of the invitations and menu. Belle Montaniel of Love in Bloom Cakes created a glorious two-tier cake that featured a bottom tier with darker colours to represent the Land of the Dead and a top tier that was full of bright colours and blooming flowers to represent life. For our table settings, the team showcased gold accents to bring in a more classic feel and added beautiful colourful flowers, glasses, and candles to follow our theme and add a pop of colour to the dark wood furniture. “This shoot is a great source of inspiration for anyone looking for ways to add colour, personality, or a little bit of tradition in a more contemporary way,” Im shares.
