The slip dress is one of the biggest bridal gown trends happening in 2020 and in to 2021 (it’s one of our key trends of the year as seen in our 2020 Wedding Trends Guide). The retro ‘90s silhouette is loved for its simplicity, lack of detailing and flattering draped silhouette which looks amazing on a wide range of body types and sizes.
The White By Vera Wang collection for David’s Bridal has just introduced a sexy lineup of slip dresses and overlays which are designed to mix and match with each other so you can create bespoke bridal looks (and easily and affordably switch up your style vibe from ceremony to reception) We spoke to Heather McReynolds, divisional merchandise manager for bridal, flower girl and outwear for David’s Bridal about the new White By Vera Wang collection and why it’s the perfect choice for today’s current wedding climate.
What was the inspiration behind the line?
“The inception of this idea came in early 2019 as we were collaborating on ways to innovate within the bridal space reflective of today’s modern bride. The versatility of a two-in-one look coupled with the personalization factor so each bride can create her own unique, individual style feels very fresh.”
What do you attribute the rise of the retro slip dress too?
“We are seeing a major resurgence of ‘90s fashion trends and the slip dress is synonymous with that era. The defining moment in wedding style for this trend of course was the 1996 nuptials of John F Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette when she wore that gorgeous, yet minimalist silk crepe slip dress designed by Narciso Rodriguez. It has become one of the most iconic and beloved looks of all time in bridal fashion.”
Who are these gowns perfect for?
“The deconstructed nature of these slips and overdresses are perfect for brides who want a romantic, ethereal look without sacrificing comfort. This collection would be great for casual ‘minimonies’ or any outdoor wedding venue whether a backyard, a garden or even a winery.”
The overlays are amazing—a bride can create drama and multiple looks so easily. What are some ideas for mixing looks up using these pieces?
“The versatility of this collection is one of the things I love most for brides…in addition to being able to easily change your look from ceremony to reception to after party, the slip dresses are a great option for all of her events surrounding the wedding (engagement party, bridal shower, rehearsal dinner, post wedding brunch); a honeymoon or even as a fashion look in your everyday wardrobe. Pair the slip back to a cool sneaker, sexy strappy sandal or even an edgy bootie for a chic street style look. Check out our customization page on the website where you can play around with all the slips and overlays to create your perfect wedding day look.
The price point of these pieces really allow brides the option to play with their look.
“All combinations of a slip and overdress are priced under $1,000 which is an incredible value for these pieces which allow you the versatility to change up your look on the big day and beyond.”
