Oscar de la Renta: Something Blue

Oscar de la Renta’s new floral fragrance Something Blue was inspired by the romance of a wedding day. We sat down with the designer backstage after his stunning Spring 2014 bridal runway show to hear his thoughts about the fragrance, his new bridal collection and the secret to a happy marriage.

Oscar de la Renta is passionate about many things, fragrance being one of them. The 80-year-old designer believes scent is an integral part of a woman’s finished style because it speaks to who she is. “Fragrance is something very personal,” de la Renta says. “If I was blind, I should be able to recognize a woman by the fragrance she’s wearing.”

His latest scent Something Blue is unmistakably Oscar. An elegant, soft floral, it blends notes of mandarin, linden blossom and bourbon vanilla with stephanotis (a fabulously fragrant flower that makes for an incredible wedding bouquet). “I didn’t create this specifically as a bridal scent but rather one that should be worn for a very special moment,” de la Renta shares. “I believe a great fragrance should not be worn just for a day like your wedding, but one you identify with and wear for a very long time.”

De la Renta is obviously in a romantic state of mind these days as his latest bridal collection captured the ultrafeminine feeling he bottled with Something Blue. The Spring 2014 show opened with an exquisite pale blue silk organza and tulle embroidered gown, followed by a parade of white and ivory Chantilly lace, silk faille, silk organza and crepe gowns before the show-stopping finale—a pink tulle gown with ivory silk organza flower appliqués, lace embroidery and a pink tulle wrap.

When asked about the inspiration behind the collection, de la Renta’s answer was surprisingly simple. “A bridal dress is the most important dress in a woman’s life,” de la Renta smiles. “When I design, I want to make something to fulfill all those dreams a woman has for that very special day. I always do my very best to make a woman proud of her femininity and help her to enjoy what will be one of the happiest days of her life.”

As a man who has lived an incredible life, and been married for more than 20 years, we had to ask Oscar his advice for a successful marriage. “It’s a give and take. Marriage is about two partners that have committed to a life together.”
