The #MeToo movement has reached the bridal world. This season, designer Rita Vinieris is taking her cues from the current cultural climate. “The spring 2019 collection is all about acceptance and empowerment,” says Vinieris. Words like “strong,” “confident,” and “courageous” define the collection for her, and there’s no doubt her warrior brides will feel that way too. Each look is named for an inspirational woman past or present, ranging from (Nicole) Kidman to (Marie) Curie. For her NYBW presentation, the styling was straight out of Game of Thrones, with models sporting metallic gladiator sandals and twisted braids wrapped with delicate trailing chains.
Vinieris’s signature Rivini collection showed strong, elegant silhouettes alongside less traditional, forward-thinking options. Meticulously constructed gowns in crepe, lace, and chiffon flatter in womanly, curvaceous cuts. The more minimalist options benefit from architectural details, while classic designs — such as a halter ballgown or a beaded lace and chiffon gown with a exaggerated fit and flare skirt — are updated either via colour with hits of peony pink, or with shoulder accents like fluttering off-the-shoulder sleeves. Power pantsuits in lace or Oxford silk and a sheer lace jumpsuit — made new for the season with dramatic wide leg cuts — will appeal to the bride who wears the pants in her relationship.
