I awoke to a rainy day in N.Y.C., but braved a torrential downpour—with $5 umbrella in hand—for one of the most-anticipated runway shows of bridal market: Oscar de la Renta.
As I mentioned in one of my previous entries, Oscar’s show was one of my absolute favourites last year, and this time around was no exception. The showroom was abuzz with anticipation, and from the corner of my eye I could see the models fidgeting behind a screen, composing themselves for their turn on the catwalk. And just before showtime, the man himself, Oscar de la Renta, discreetly slipped into the back row. What followed was truly breathtaking. The 26 looks ranged from chic tweed shift dresses with matching jackets to magnificent ruffled organza ballgowns. Some of the trends that really stood out: contrasting colour ribbon sashes; boleros, coats and jackets; and pale shades of blue and pink. Even the most jaded editors were moved, “I don’t think I’ve ever had butterflies at a show before,” declared a fellow writer as we were heading to the elevators. I couldn’t agree more. It was definitely love at first sight, and I’m especially smitten with this blush-coloured empire-waist gown (pictured), which looks like something a Jane Austen heroine would wear for her nuptials.
