Los Angeles-based designer Mark Zunino’s style is about as, well, “L.A.” as you can get—just ask Sofia Vergara, Mariah Carey, or Britney Spears, all of whom have worn his creations on red carpets and award stages. After several seasons designing bridalwear exclusively for Kleinfeld (Canada’s own Jessi Cruickshank wore a custom gown by the designer on her big day), Zunino has finally struck out on his own with an eponymous wedding collection available internationally.
Zunino uses this season’s collection to show off his range as a designer, with something for everyone on display: Regal ball gowns, sophisticated sheaths, and figure-hugging mermaid dresses abound.
“The Mark Zunino bride is forward-thinking and independent. She embodies femininity by being bold and outspoken but combines it with a touch of delicacy,” the designer explains. Prime examples of this ethos: A flirty strapless lace mini dress with a sweeping organza overskirt that takes the high-low concept to the extreme, and a cap-sleeved number with full A-line skirt and angular illusion cutaway bodice, festooned with floral lace appliques.
As modern as these pieces are, the collection also draws heavily on historical styles. Case in point: A medieval-inspired frock with a cascading lace peplum, sweetheart neckline, and sweeping bell sleeves. Capes and Watteau backs also make an appearance, as do draped off-the-shoulder straps.
