Kim Soane, makeup artist and executive director of North America artistry for Bobbi Brown Cosmetics, has created beautiful looks for women of all ages during her 15 year career in the makeup industry. We asked Soane to share some of her essential tips and secrets for helping a bride look and feel her best on her big day.
Weddingbells: What are your top five must-have products for every bride? Kim Soane: "I love our Skin Long Wear Weightless Foundation SP15, Highlighting Powder, Long-Wear Cream Shadow Stick, Luxe Lip Colour, and Corrector –they work together for flawless skin, a long-wearing and subtle eye, and a gorgeous lip."
Highlighting Powder, $48, bobbibrowncosmetics.comWB: What is the best feature for brides to accentuate? KS: "For brides, I like to play up their cheekbones and natural, luminous skin, with glow on the cheekbones, bridge of nose, and Cupid’s bow."
Long-Wear Cream Shadow Stick, $30, bobbibrowncosmetics.comWB: How can a bride ensure her makeup lasts throughout the day? KS: "Skin prep is essential. I recommend using a primer and long-lasting foundation, such as our Skin Long-Wear Weightless Foundation SPF15. After, set the skin with a powder or Bronzing Powder, layering on a Highlighting Powder and then a powder Blush – this way, the colour will last all day and night and won’t fade."
Luxe Lip Color, $37, bobbibrowncosmetics.comWB: What is your favourite bridal beauty look? KS: "I love naturally flush skin, a clean liner that defines the eyes (such as our Long-Wear Gel Eyeliner), and a pretty nude statement lip colour, such as Luxe Lip Color."
WB: What are your top three don'ts when it comes to bridal makeup? KS: "Many brides tell us that they want to look like the best versions of themselves on their wedding day. Because the look is often light and natural, I recommend clean liner over a smokey eye. I also avoid putting lip gloss on, because hair and veil can get stuck if the formula is sticky. For photos, I also recommend avoiding highlight along the brow bones in a shimmer or metallic formula – they’ll be emphasized over the eyes in every photo."
WB: What is the one beauty trend you see on Instagram that doesn't work for bridal? KS: "Balancing extra lashes – if the lash line is extra heavy and weighed down by too many lashes, the eyes can appear smaller and heavy. It’s a balancing act!"
Skin Long-Wear Weightless Foundation SPF15, $46, bobbibrowncosmetics.comWB: Where should a bride look for bridal inspo? KS: "Definitely search Pinterest for looks to take to a makeup test application, also search fashion show looks from bridal week in New York City or in London. For example, this season, the team at Bobbi Brown worked with designer Reem Acra and the resulting look is beautiful, ethereal, and absolutely wearable."
WB: What's your secret beauty tip that nobody really knows about? KS: "I think a lot of people “know to do it” but I’m not sure if they do it all the time: using eye cream, like our Hydrating Eye Cream. It layers beautifully under makeup, and should be used morning and night, each and every day!"
