Practicing diligent at-home hair colour care is one of the most important factors to ensure your hair is glossy and gorgeous on your wedding day. Not using proper products and following colour-care protocol can lead to colour fade and dullness and let’s face it, hair colour is a pricey investment you want to protect!
Every hair colour has its own unique set of care rules that are important to follow to keep it looking fresh and fabulous. We spoke to Chanel Laporte, a stylist with Kérastase, for her insider tips and tricks to keeping your colour locked-in and luminous.
What are the critical steps one needs to take to preserve hair colour at home?
“The first step in preserving hair colour at home would be purchasing salon quality products to help maintain colour. Specifically, shampoo, conditioner, treatment and primer for your daily/weekly routine. Shampoo and conditioner can help preserve colour as they are formulated with ingredients specifically chosen to not aggressively wash away colour pigments in your hair. Depending on your hair type and hair needs, an intensive treatment is always a great idea as it protects an rejuvenates hair. Lastly, always prime hair with a colour-friendly heat protecting product before blow drying or using hot tolls as it helps reduce fading.”
Every hair colour comes with its specific set of needs. Can you outline concerns and care for blondes, brunettes and redheads?
“A general concern with blonde hair would be repairing and/or maintaining a healthy hair as lightening it can greatly sensitize it. I recommend using a products from the Kérastase Resistance line which helps repair and soothe. Blonde tones can also be partial to brassiness so using a violet shampoo and conditioner will help neutralize that. With brunettes the goal is keep colour rich and using a complete system of colour products like the Kérastase Reflection line. This is also my advice for redheads as it is the fastest fading colour. Also, things to consider for colour preservation is exposure to sun which also impacts longevity.”
True or false: the less you wash your hair the longer your colour will last?
“True! The less you wash your hair until your next colour service better chance you have at maintaining your vibrant colour. This is a factor in particular for red and copper tones.”
Hair masking: how often should you do it and why does it make a big difference to the longevity of colour?
“Hair masking is the secret to healthy hair with great shine. I recommend masking once a week for clients who frequently wash their hair; or every one or two washes to help nourish and protect the lengths and ends. The end result will help improve colour because healthy hair always appears more vibrant.”
