Damiani's Dazzling Diamonds

It's not every day you get to try on jewellery that has appeared in an Oscar-nominated film, but that's exactly what I did yesterday morning! Birks jewellers partnered with Damiani to host a fabulous event at Toronto's Hazelton Hotel, and members of the media were invited to get up close and personal with some stunning pieces, which appeared in Italian film I Am Love. Starring Tilda Swinton, this movie was recently nominated for Best Costume Design at the Academy Awards, and If you haven't already seen it, I highly recommend renting it this weekend. Everything in this film is visually pleasing---from the scenery and the food to Tilda's enviable wardrobe---and I guarantee it will make you want to honeymoon in Italy! Speaking of which, Silvia Damiani, Vice President of the Damiani Group, flew in from Milan especially for the occasion, and she was on hand to share the gorgeous Damiani collection with us. While passing around a divine aquamarine and diamond ring, talk naturally turned to engagement rings (including Kate Middleton's sapphire), and I was interested to hear that engagement rings aren't quite as traditional in Europe. Apparently, clear diamonds are not the norm, and many women choose coloured stones instead. What is most important, according to Silvia, is that the bride loves her ring and finds it meaningful. Ultimately, this is what makes jewellery so special, says Silvia---the sentimental factor. We certainly couldn't agree more, and it definitely wouldn't be hard to get sentimental about a glorious cocktail ring like this one (pictured left)!
