Bridal Fashion Highlights of 2010

  |   By Nicole Keen

Rosettes were one of our favourite trends from 2010. This headband by Dessy is a perfectly pretty accessory for your big day.

It's that time of year when everyone starts looking back on the year that was, so I thought I'd do the same. To say 2010 was a big year in the world of weddings would be a major understatement. First and foremost, this past year marked the 25th anniversary of Weddingbells magazine! Not only that, but there was a flurry of celebrity weddings (Carrie Underwood, Hilary Duff, Alicia Keys, Chelsea Clinton, Coco Rocha and Nicole Richie all tied the knot in 2010), a plethora of inspiring fashion trends and a royal engagement. Phew. So, without further ado, here are some of my fashion highlights from 2010.

ROSETTES

Everything was coming up roses this season. Whether on a gown or in your hair (see left), this feminine flourish is definitely here to stay. Did I mention Dessy makes adorable accessories?

BLACK ACCENTS

Bridal designers took a walk on the dark side with black embellishments and details on ivory wedding gowns. This one by Modern Trousseau is especially striking. I also love the idea of a simple black sash at the waist—so elegant!

BRIGHTLY COLOURED SHOES

This is one trend that I can't get enough of. I'm noticing more and more brides choosing fun statement shoes for their weddings, and I couldn't be happier. Wearing colourful shoes under your white dress is a great way to express your personality. I happen to have a particular weakness for red ones like this pair by Nina.

BEST ACCESSORIES: CHELSEA CLINTON

Chelsea's Vera Wang gown was absolutely gorgeous, but what took it to the next level for me were her accessories. I loved her sparkly belt (a modern touch) and flowing veil (something traditional).

SHORT WEDDING DRESSES

Flirty mini dresses were all over the bridal runways in 2010. This style is a fabulous and fresh fashion option if you're having an informal ceremony (hello, City Hall), and it's also great if you plan on purchasing a second dress for your reception. This dress by J. Crew perfectly epitomizes casual chic.

BEST DESIGNER COLLABORATION: COCO ROCHA & ZAC POSEN

When supermodel Coco Rocha wed in France this past summer she wore the most exquisite custom creation by Zac Posen. Her exaggerated mermaid gown fit her to a T and looked simply flawless.

What was your favourite bridal fashion trend/moment of 2010? I'd love to hear your thoughts!
