“Classic” has become a bit of outcast word in the age of the #CoolBride. Not so at Anne Barge, where it’s held up as the ideal. The brands philosophy? “Good design is timeless.” This mantra showed through in the designer’s Fall/Winter 2018 collections.
The runway presentation combined two collections, Anne Barge Couture and Blue Willow Bride, into one cohesive showing. Those who’ve dreamed of their wedding day since childhood could almost certainly find their “dream dress” represented here—sweetheart necklines, dramatic trains, and luxe fabrics are Barge’s stock-in-trade. Modesty and elegance are hallmarks, but that’s not to say modernity isn’t also key— minimalists will appreciate the designer’s calculated restraint when it comes to adornment.
This season’s inspiration is “an escape into a fanciful garden.” Whispers of pink, oversized bows, and floral motifs relay the feminine motivation. Standouts include a chic strapless all-lace column and a girly princess gown covered with tiny embroidered daisies. Crisp, heavy satin gives dramatic structure and shine to many dresses, with silhouette options ranging from mermaids to pleated ball gowns. The star of the show: a gown with a skirt that took the form of a fluffy two-tiered cloud of tulle and organza petals accented with delicate pearls, bringing to mind a cascade of blooming peonies.
