For Toronto influencer Jill Lansky of the popular blog The August Diaries and her new husband Andrew Cameron, their wedding felt like a full circle moment. The pair met at the destination wedding for their respective best friends and clicked instantly. “It was a four-day wedding and we became inseparable,” Jill reveals. “Leaving that weekend we knew it was more than just a fling, so we decided to make it work.” The couple dated long-distance, with Jill living in Vancouver at the time and Andrew living in Kingston, Ontario. “Four years after that fateful wedding, we stood opposite each other at our own wedding, this time with those same best friends as a bridesmaid (and officiant!) and groomsman at ours,” Jill shares. “The tables had turned, and it was such a meaningful and satisfying closing of the loop.”
The rambling, rustic beauty of the Okanagan Valley served as the backdrop to the couple’s June nuptials. “We both felt colours were critical to the event, because they set the tone for everything, so having a palette that complemented beautiful B.C. was a top priority,” Jill says. With natural shades of green, balanced with white and gold and minimal touches of black and wood, the couple’s celebration was a modern-chic al fresco affair. “Our floral designers completely embraced our vision of something non-traditional with very little colour,” Jill says. “They created a slightly rustic and earthy vibe, with lots of green and wildflowers to complement rather than overpower the rows of grapes in the vineyard.”
The details prior to the wedding turned out to be some of the most important. From the outset, Jill shares, the rings were a treasured detail. “Tamara of Toronto’s Studio 1098 designed my custom black diamond, white halo deco-style ring, which was the ring I always wanted without even knowing it,” she says. “She also created Andrew’s brushed-gold band, which was so, so perfect.” Another detail that was important from the get-go was Jill’s wedding dress, which she purchased it 18 months prior to the occasion. “I saw a Calvin Klein ready-to-wear dress on Net-A-Porter about a month after our engagement and ordered it—it was my very first wedding purchase,” Jill explains. “I loved that it was white, clean, simple and timeless. I will be dyeing this one black so I can wear it for years to come—it’s just too good to only wear once!”
A memorable moment from the day was exchanging vows. “We wrote are own, and they were so different yet so similar—heartfelt, intimate, funny and with a Harry Potter reference or two,” Jill says. After the ceremony, guests mingled and signed the hybrid photobook and guestbook. “We have some marvelous and hilarious gems in there, and it now sits on our coffee table as an incredible reminder of a great night.”
As the party went into the night, the DJ kept guests of all ages dancing. “The first person on the dance floor was Andrew’s 85 year-old grandfather who just couldn’t get enough,” Jill reveals. “Every single guest made an appearance on the dance floor throughout the night, thanks to DJ John Byrne.” A car arrived at the reception loaded with A&W burgers, which proved to be the ultimate late-night snack for their guests. “We’re talking a car full of Mama and Papa burgers that could feed an army,” Jill says with a laugh. “Nothing is more satisfying than a truck load of fast food after a night of dancing, and the guests looked at the delivery person like she was their late night hero!”
