John proposed to Adrienne while the couple was on a bicycle tour through the Costa Brava area in Spain. “One night we were going out for dinner and decided to take a walk first,” Adrienne explains. “John ended up spotting this hidden staircase built into the rocks leading to a beautiful rocky plateau where he asked, but not before slipping on a rock and scraping up his knees!”
The couple wanted their wedding to be simple with a natural feel, so when they toured a friend’s barn they knew it was the perfect venue for their celebration. “The barn was such a beautiful space with a raw and rustic look—we went for really minimal colour schemes,” Adrienne says. “We had lots of greenery and some deeper reds and purples in the florals, to tie into the woods of the barn, tables, chairs and outdoor ceremony area.”
One of the best parts of the day was the intimate and whimsical ceremony. “Because we didn’t have a formal bridal party, John and I walked through a little path in the woods together,” Adrienne shares. “I loved this moment of entering side-by-side and turning to see everyone gathered there. After the ceremony, John’s brother Matt came up to the front and pulled names out of a hat (a stormtrooper helmet, actually) to select the witnesses.”
Another fun and personal touch the couple used was themed tables, choosing visual displays of spray painted gold dinosaurs, fidget spinners, and skulls to represent the tables and add whimsy.
The wedding favours were some of the most unique details of the day. “We decided to have portraits of each of our guests drawn. We felt it would be a great way to make everyone feel really special, and give them a personalized memento of our day,” Adrienne says. “My brother created all of them using a mix of watercolour and ink. When our guests entered the barn, they had to find their picture at their table, which served as their place setting. The reaction of guests was great—everyone really loved the pictures.”
