An Ethereal Woodland Wedding In Toronto

Mary and Blake met while both were both living in Iqaluit, Nunavut. “Since it is a fairly remote community, you end up meeting most of the people in a similar age range,” Mary explains. “We ended up playing on rival softball teams and after one of the tournaments Blake asked me out on our first date.”

The couple planned their entire Toronto wedding from 5,400 kilometres away in Whitehorse, Yukon. “The Yukon is amazing in its pure, undeveloped beauty,” Mary shares. “We wanted to bring some of that love for the outdoors to Toronto.” What resulted was the wedding’s ethereal woodland theme with a colour scheme of green, peach and burgundy. “The whole day was a little surreal since we had been planning for a year without seeing the venue or meeting any vendors.”

Mary’s pre-wedding adventures also took her to Vancouver, where she met her mom, sister and one of her bridesmaids to shop for her dress, an activity she loved. “We spent two days hunting for the one,” she explains. “I was so thrilled to find it!”

Mary dove into several DIY projects for her wedding, which included the invitations, all the paper goods and the guest map. She also enlisted the help of family to construct some of the decor. “My father is super handy so he made the arch under which we were married,” Mary elaborates. “He transported it from his house an hour away from the ceremony–that was such a special detail for me, as it was a labour of love for him.”

During the reception, the venue lost power for an hour and the couple had to do their entrance in candlelight without any music. “Our wedding was on the same day as the final performance of The Tragically Hip tour,” Mary recalls. “There was a live broadcast on giant screens near the reception and it blew a breaker. We rolled with it!”
