Every year we ask cake designers all across Canada to submit their most impressive wedding cake designs, and the photos we receive never cease to amaze us. With submissions from every part of the country from Parksville, British Columbia to Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, this year’s featured cakes are as diverse as the areas they represent.

If there’s anything that we’ve gleaned when it comes to wedding cake trends for the year ahead, it’s that anything goes. Inspired by metallic hues, laser cut finishings and floral motifs, each of these 35 over-the-top confections would make a beautiful wedding sweet table centrepiece.

From the designer: The Madeline cake is as beautiful and grand as the classic French name suggests. The name, meaning tower, is a perfect namesake for this four-tier cake. We wanted to create a cake with the reflective beauty of Venetian glass and we chose tones to give the feeling of the sea. I fell in love with Venetian glass over 15 years ago when I visited Venice for the first time. I am still awed by Venetian chandeliers and sculptures every time I see them in hotels and galleries. From the designer: Seen for centuries in the arts, fruits and blooms are always inspiring subject matter. In this design, the colours are eye catching, complementary and a little vintage. The painted, sculpted and drawn elements were all inspired by botanical drawings and paintings seen in old encyclopedias. The inside is just as much of a dream: lady grey bergamot infused cake is paired with a peach and honey buttercream. The bride and groom had a very traditional white wedding with small bursts of vibrant red and gold accents throughout. They wanted their cake to fit the same theme, but opposite - with mostly red, and using gold and white accents. Along with the contrasting wedding colours, when you cut into this cake the red tiers were vanilla cake with ice wine lavender buttercream and the white tier with gold brushed is a vibrant red velvet cake cream cheese buttercream. From the designer: This cake was designed after a trip to Lisbon where I saw beautiful handbags made from laser-cut cork fabric and I instantly wanted to replicate the concept in cake! The bottom tier is made completely of sugar with the pattern cut and painted by hand to resemble cork. I love using deep, saturated colours in my designs and I balanced this cake’s boldness with light, airy sugar flowers and soft blue marbling on the top tiers. From the designer: Inspired by Chinoiserie decorative arts, this cake was designed to mimic the exuberant decoration that focuses on leisure and pleasure as often seen in the 18th century. The intricately patterned cake was hand-painted with shades of blue food colouring. I gave the cake dimension and interesting shape through using a hexagonal tier and sculpted finial for the top that pays homage to ancient Chinese vases. On the inside, a lovely almond scented cake was paired with blue violet ganache and black currant buttercream. From the designer: My inspiration for this cake is a wedding gown from a Slovakian fashion designer, Miklosko. I instantly fell in love with the colour palette used, which featured a neutral tones of cream and gold with shots of hot pink flowers all throughout. I incorporated an elaborate gilded frame to enclose the handmade sugar flowers such as English roses and soft pink hydrangeas. From the designer: This Alice in Wonderland-inspired cake has been an idea of mine since the summer of 2015. By using lots of texture and very soft hues, I aimed to create something extremely romantic, as well as nostalgic; bringing us back to Wonderland. I decided to branch off a bit and create some very delicate white ranunculus as well as a sugar ruffling effect, which was made to mimic Alice's iconic blue dress.
