Luxurious Affair

Fashion & Beauty

wbjune09_ceremony

I just returned from the Ritz Carlton, Grand Cayman from a luxury wedding business symposium called Engage!09 (hosted by the fabulous Rebecca Grinnals), and spent a few days among some of the wedding “greats” like designer extraordinaire, Preston Bailey; cake guru, Sylvia Weinstock; and the editorial director of Martha Stewart Weddings, Darcy Miller (to only name a few of the talented attendees). State of Mind

A good attitude is the most important ingredient when planning your destination wedding. The saying that “nothing is perfect” stands true to any wedding, but you need to be even more open-minded and realistic when planning your destination wedding. Read the rest of this entry »

Beach BBQ

Fashion & Beauty

The classic DW reception dinner is an outdoor beach BBQ. It’s fun, casual and in the spirit of the location. Often said brides and grooms are seeking the most unique and “different” things to do for their wedding (and I’m always all for unique), but sometimes it’s just worth sticking with something that works. The tried, tested and true expression does ring true in this instance. So why make it hard on yourself? wbjune09_shrimp Read the rest of this entry »

Engagement photos don’t have to be “typical” or taken months before your wedding. As destination weddings tend to throw the traditional aspects of weddings out the window, why not do what you want with your photos? Read the rest of this entry »

I just returned from South Beach this past long weekend and had a relaxing stay at The Setai hotel (setai.com). LUXE had planned Shelly and Ben’s last minute “switch” wedding at this Miami hot spot only a few weeks ago, and I can honestly say that this is a phenomenal location for a wedding. The hotel is architecturally stunning, and it exudes a very Zen vibe throughout. Read the rest of this entry »

The Caves: A Romantic Escape

One of my favourite hotels is The Caves in Negril, Jamaica. It’s a perfect place for an all-property buyout (think: total privacy and a resort all to yourself!) and a romantic, unique wedding choice for couples seeking something a bit different than the norm. The Caves is part of the Island Outpost family of hotels and it’s charming, quirky and the farthest thing from mass market. Read the rest of this entry »

Shoes or Barefoot?

Fashion & Beauty

One of the biggest destination wedding debates is whether or not to wear shoes. Are you a barefoot or heels gal? Most ladies I know like shoes a lot, and your wedding is a great time to splurge on a fabulous pair. However, stilettos are not realistic for the beach and traditionally, a barefoot ceremony goes hand in hand with a destination wedding.

Save the Date Magnets

Fashion & Beauty » Planning

When it came to my own DW, I decided to make my own save-the-date magnets. I figured this would be a sure way to keep the event fresh in my guests’ minds and get them thinking about booking their tickets to my wedding.

To start, I asked a very creative graphic designer friend to help me create the layout. We talked about sticking with a beach/tropical theme, but staying away from something too cheesy or cartoonish. Also, I wanted to incorporate my love for things antique into the design, so he came up with a vintage palm tree motif. I loved it instantly! He laid out the design in a tiled format on a standard 8.5 x 11 paper size so I could print them from home.

Destination Giving

Fashion & Beauty

Your wedding is one of the few times in your life when you are allowed to be a bit self-centred…well, at least your friends and family will let you get away with it. That said, we live in a world where it’s important to be mindful of more than just your own personal universe and realize that giving back is a blessing. Why not channel some of your “wedding love” into a better cause?

Party Must-haves

Fashion & Beauty

Although I often advise destination couples to steer clear of the traditional route and create a wedding unique to their vision, there are a few must-haves that really help pull a party together. Signature drinks are a definite must and there are so many reasons why. Not only is it a fun way to add another personal touch to your intimate affair, but offering only a limited selection of drinks adds sophistication. Narrowing down what you serve to guests is also a great way to save some dollars if you’re facing a steep open bar charge.

Hot Spot

Fashion & Beauty

Call it the destination du jour: the Riviera Maya really is a hot spot for weddings. This area has grown in leaps and bounds with a number of luxury brand hotels popping up on this stretch of lovely Caribbean coastline. What started as an offshoot of the popular Cancun strip has turned into a sophisticated locale filled with options for every budget. From high-end boutique villas once owned by royalty to chic eco-shacks on the beach—just sorting through the options can be a time-consuming and confusing task if you’re unfamiliar with the territory.

Playa del Carmen, roughly the centre of the action between Cancun and Tulum, is a thriving city with a not-too-distant past as a small fishing town and artist colony. I’ve had countless conversations with my father about Playa, which was once the place to catch a ferry to Cozumel. Wow—look how far it’s come! It was only a few years ago that I remember walking along 5th Avenue watching a Starbucks being built, and I woke the next morning to see it fully operational.

Budget on the Brain

Fashion & Beauty

One of the leading issues on our minds (and for good reason) is the economy. It has touched us all in differing ways and despite economists’ grim forecasting, it’s important to stay positive. For all you DW brides and grooms out there, how is it affecting you personally? Have your budgets been slimmed down?

Welcome Brides and Grooms-to-be!

Fashion & Beauty

I must start by saying how excited I am to be launching this blog! There are so many questions about destination weddings, and I am always happy to talk about anything DW related. As a former destination bride, and co-owner of LUXE Destination Weddings, I’ve been living and breathing everything “destination wedding” for the past five years. Without sounding too cliché, I’ve honestly seen and heard it all before—no question or subject is too strange considering the uniqueness of all wedding couples. Needless to say, my brain is full of ideas, which I look forward to sharing with you. Each week, I will pick a topic related to destination weddings.
