A Stunning, Scenic Mountain Wedding in Banff

Real Weddings

An Outdoor Mountain Wedding in Banff, Alberta - Bridal Party

Trisha and Alex had just reached the top of a treacherous six-hour hike up Mauna Kea volcano in Hawaii when they stopped to take in the view. “I asked Alex to take a photo of me facing the sun,” Trisha recalls. “He was taking forever, but when I turned around to yell at him, I found him on his knee holding out a ring!” Trisha describes the moment as the biggest surprise of her life. “We had never discussed marriage in our 11 years together,” she remarks. “Not even once!”

As hiking enthusiasts, Trisha and Alex knew they wanted an outdoor ceremony in the mountains. The couple decided on a destination wedding in Banff because of its breathtaking scenery that would make for great wedding photography. “One of our photos was taken on a giant rock on a glacier lake,” the couple explains. “Our photographer actually carried some of us over the freezing cold water!” As winter had come early in Banff, the couple offered their guests blankets to keep them warm while they recited their vows.

Following the outdoor ceremony, the newlyweds hosted their indoor reception at the Mount Norquay ski lodge. “We wanted our reception to look like a forest, so we brought nature indoors with greenery crowding the room and hanging from the ceiling,” Trisha explains. “The venue had natural light, wooden beams and a nice fireplace which made it so cozy,” the bride says. When the reception began, an elk dropped by the entrance stairs to the venue. “Our guests gathered at the window of the room to watch the unexpected guest outside,” Trisha recalls. “We were all so happy and amused.”

Being a cake artist, Trisha had high expectations for her wedding cake. Ultimately, the bride decided to make the black and gold, mountain-themed cake herself. “I had it driven across the country to Banff, and displayed it on a swing we made, suspended from the ceiling beams,” Trisha says.

The outdoorsy couple’s wedding ended with a late night s’mores bar. “We spend our summers camping with our friends, so making s’mores outside at night just felt so natural to us.”

A Minimalist Winter Wedding in Toronto

Real Weddings

A Minimal Winter Wedding in Toronto, Ontario - Bride and Groom

Eliza and Dave met at a mutual friend’s Christmas party in 2010. “We hit it off immediately,” Eliza shares. “I even left my purse with him when I went to the washroom to ensure we could continue our conversation when I came back.” The pair began dating long distance between New York and Hamilton, until Eliza eventually accepted a position at FASHION Magazine in Toronto. At the time of their wedding, they had been dating for eight years.

“We wanted a minimal, romantic, winter wedding,” Eliza says of her décor inspiration. At the reception, tables were kept dark to fade into the venue’s skyline backdrop and a neutral floral installation hung above them. For the most part, the floral décor was built on site the day of the wedding. “I could not have found a better match when I met Lauren Sellen at Coyote Flowers,” Eliza says. “My family sourced mesh that Lauren attached dried hydrangeas, pampas grass, baby’s breath, orchids and amaranth to.” Mid-ceremony, the couple’s three-year-old niece headed down the aisle to recollect her tossed rose petals. “I don’t blame her for not wanting to let go of the beautiful toffee-coloured roses,” Eliza says.

The bride first fell in love with her wedding gown by Danielle Frankel after seeing it online. “I loved how the dress, with its billowing sleeves and sleek skirt, straddled simple and dramatic,” Eliza remarks. “I knew it was perfect, but I couldn’t get my hands on it in Canada,” she explains. On a trip to Dallas, Eliza was able to track down the dress and arrange to eventually meet with Danielle in New York to have her measurements taken in person.

“Dave and I attended a number of weddings where Grooveyard had performed and always had a great time on the dance floor,” Eliza explains. For their first dance song, the couple chose “Beyond” by Leon Bridges. “I nearly ruined the song by playing it on repeat before the wedding,” the bride shares. “But Grooveyard did a wonderful version of this sweet song.” After the band was finished performing, guests started a request list for recorded music. “When Celine Dion’s “It’s All Coming Back to Me Now” came on, we were circled and eventually lifted on our friends’ shoulders while we lip-synced the lyrics,” Eliza recalls. “It was the perfect way to end the night.”

Kaylee Giffin’s Romantic Al Fresco Wedding in Chester, Nova Scotia

Real Weddings

A Sea-Inspired, Al Fresco Fall Wedding in Chester, Nova Scotia - Newlyweds

James Logan fell in love with Kaylee Giffin the moment he laid eyes on her during a high school math class. At first, Kaylee did not share the same feelings. “He would ask me to hang out on MSN Messenger and I told him that I didn’t hang out with people from school,” Kaylee recalls. This changed in grade 11 when James returned from vacation in Florida sporting a puka shell necklace and golden tan. “I gave him a hug and told him he looked good. Soon enough, our friendship blossomed into a romance which turned into love and we never looked back,” Kaylee says.

On their wedding day years later, James and Kaylee wanted to create a relaxed, backyard-style atmosphere for their guests. “I have always loved the idea of an al fresco wedding without a tent,” Kaylee explains. Having decided not to order a tent or even have one on backup, James and Kaylee were praying for good weather leading up to the wedding. “We ended up getting so lucky with sunny skies and one of the most beautiful, pink sunsets I’d ever seen the day of our wedding,” the couple shares.

The couple decided on a subtle palette of dusty rose and french blue to complement this laid-back vibe. “Funny enough, I learned after our wedding that the palette was similar to my parents’ wedding in the 80’s,” Kaylee remarks. According to Kaylee, having an abundance of florals was the most important detail of their wedding day. The couple incorporated a mix of local cosmos, scabiosa, ranunculus, berries and foraged greenery in their décor. At the ceremony stood a garden-inspired arbor and seagrass baskets full of flowers anchoring the aisles. Rose petals were also scattered down the outdoor aisle and lavender was placed in paper cones for guests to toss after the couple said “I do!” In addition, the bride and groom’s mothers wore custom floral bracelets. “We even had a floral collar made for our dog, Milo,” Kaylee says.

As Kaylee walked down the aisle, her 10-year-old cousin sang Ed Sheeran’s “Perfect.” “Seeing James at the end of the aisle while the lyrics ‘we were just kids when we fell in love’ were sung made me feel so confident that I was about to marry my best friend who I fell in love with at 16,” Kaylee says.

CTV Star Sherry Holmes’s Destination Wedding in St. Lucia

HGTV's Sherry Holmes' Island Escape Destination Wedding in St. Lucia - Bride and Groom

A chance work opportunity brought Sherry Holmes and Blake Steed together in 2012. At the time, Sherry and her team were completing and filming the rebuild of High Park’s castle playground in Toronto. With only two weeks to construct the giant castle, Sherry’s team decided to hire a framing company to help the project move quickly. Blake happened to be one of the framers. “He was pretty quiet, but I remembered his name as soon as I met him,” Sherry recalls. After the project was complete, Sherry’s company offered Blake a job. “We became friends while working on different projects, eventually started dating secretly and somehow ended up moving in together before we even realized it,” Sherry explains.

Sherry and Blake got married on their 5th year anniversary in St. Lucia. With a gorgeous island backdrop, the couple decided to keep their wedding décor simple yet chic. For florals, they incorporated white roses and eucalyptus table runners. Their laid-back destination wedding involved a private surf & turf dinner at the Royalton’s Rooftop Terrace set to an eclectic playlist of reggae and country music. “It took us a decent amount of time to settle on the right first dance song,” Sherry says. The couple eventually decided on “Then” by Brad Paisley. “At one point, the lyrics are ‘I can just see you, with a baby on the way,’ which is totally ironic as we picked the song prior to finding out we were expecting a baby,” Sherry says.

As Sherry was six-months pregnant at the time of the wedding, the couple decided to reveal the gender of their baby at the reception. “We knew we were having a girl early on, but kept it a secret and totally surprised everyone,” Sherry recalls. The couple had their wedding party shoot off confetti poppers with pink paper for the big reveal. “It was a fun and memorable surprise,” Sherry says. “Something to show our daughter one day.”

Because Blake’s dad passed away over five years ago, Sherry wanted to do something special to commemorate him. For her something blue, the bride had a piece of her father-in-law’s blue sweater cut into a heart and sewn into her dress. “This way, both of our fathers walked me down the aisle,” she says.

A Romantic Old Hollywood Wedding in Mississauga, Ontario - Bride and Groom

“Adam and I had the Nora Ephron ‘meet cute’ that dreams are made of,” Brittany says of her first encounter with her husband, Adam, in their hometown grocery store on a Friday night. “I was behind him in the checkout line, and couldn’t help but laugh at his terrible dad jokes,” Brittany recalls. After Adam paid and left, Brittany regretted not talking to him. “But as fate would have it, he pulled up next to me as I got into my car and asked for my name and number,” Brittany shares. “We met for coffee the following day and the rest is history.”

The couple wanted their wedding to have a glamorous Palm Springs vibe. Inspired by Old Hollywood elegance mixed with California spirit, the bride chose a white colour scheme with accents of black, gold and deep green. Both the bride’s dress and the groom’s suit were custom-made by Joseph Tassoni, a friend of the bride. “Joseph is a magician who thrives off of making his clients feel confident and beautiful in his designs. We spent months collaborating on both of our outfits, and we were over the moon with his final creations. It was sheer perfection!” Brittany shares. The couple’s rings were also one-of-a-kind heirlooms from Adam’s side of the family. “It just felt right, and so much more meaningful for our rings to have such rich family history,” the couple explains.

For Brittany and Adam, it was important to build their own unique ceremony by blending Jewish traditions with other customs they loved. “Our good friend Dan orchestrated the ceremony, with our friend Sebastian playing the violin as we walked down the aisle,” Brittany explains. The couple also had their married friends come up and read the “Seven Blessings” which is a part of a traditional Jewish ceremony. The groom’s mother gifted the couple a beautiful tiger-eye glass to smash at the end of the ceremony. “We were so fortunate that we had so many friends take part in helping to create our day,” Brittany says. “These people are the friends of Adam and I’s life together. It was such a beautiful, collaborative day, which I think made it all the more special.”

For the reception, the couple created a playlist with their DJs that would get all of their guests up and dancing. “We ended the night with the song ‘Country Roads,'” Brittany recalls. “Everyone who was still there all came together in this huddle, and I swear I will never forget it.”

Soccer Player Sophie Schmidt's Rustic Summer Wedding in New Zealand - Bride and Groom

Canadian professional soccer player Sophie Schmidt was playing her second season for Frankfurt FFC when she met Nicholas Kyle, a theatre actor who was in Frankfurt for five months performing at the English Theatre. Following some great conversation in the lobby after Nicholas’ play, the pair exchanged numbers. When Sophie left, Nicholas fondly remembers one of his cast members asking, “Where is your future wife going?” Later that week, Nicholas and Sophie had their first date, which started at the Christmas Market and turned into five different dates in one day.

The couple was exploring a castle’s hidden garden on a weekend trip to Prague when Nicholas proposed. “I was taking in the view when I heard Nicholas say something from behind me. I turned around and he was down on one knee holding out a box with a perfect ring inside,” Sophie recalls.

For their summer wedding in New Zealand, Sophie and Nicholas went with rustic and minimalist wedding décor that included beer hall-style seating, beautiful wooden benches and tables and flowers from a local lavender farm. “The venue had so much charm that hardly anything extra was needed,” Sophie explains.

The wedding cake was handmade by the bride’s sisters-in-law the day before the wedding. “I wanted a rustic, simple little wedding cake that had character,” Sophie shares. “I sent them an inspiration picture from Pinterest and she absolutely nailed it.” The cake was topped with authentic Star Wars figurines that were a wedding gift from a friend who was not able to make the wedding. “We agreed to put them on the cake and we gladly kept our promise,” the couple says.

For Sophie and Nicholas, one important detail was that the engagement ring and wedding bands were ethically sourced and handcrafted from local jewelry makers. At the start of the ceremony, the wedding bands were tied together and passed around to all of the guests. Each guest was able to hold them in their hands and say a wish, a good thought or simply have a look before passing them on. “At first, I was a bit nervous about losing the bands, but this warming of the rings before putting them on was special because it was so inclusive,” Sophie explains. “Our guests felt extremely honoured to be included in the ceremony in that way.”

In the moments following the words, “I now pronounce you husband and wife,” the couple had their first kiss before walking down the aisle together as guests threw lavender in the air and a bag piper played classic tunes. “We are an easy going couple that spends a lot of time traveling and living out of suitcases, so it was important to make the wedding all about the people, not things,” Sophie explains. During the afternoon cocktail hour, a live band performed as guests mingled, played various outdoor games and enjoyed a custom crafted wedding beer. “Our guests were barefoot, carefree and enjoying the moment,” Sophie says.

A Fairy Tale Winter Wedding in Toronto

A Fairytale Winter Wedding in Toronto, Ontario - Bride and Groom

Nelson Thall proposed to Talia Brown on a boat ride in Ontario cottage country, right in front of the spot where they shared their first kiss. “He held my hand and got on one knee and asked if I would marry him,” Talia shares. “Quickly, without really realizing this was the moment, I said ‘of course, I can’t live without you.'”

From the beginning, Nelson and Talia knew that their wedding theme would be whimsical fairytale. “We looked at many venues around the city, but Nel kept saying they didn’t remind him of me,” Talia explains. When the couple received a tour of the Crystal Ballroom at The Omni King Edward Hotel, they knew it was the perfect fit. “It was exactly what we envisioned. Very Beauty and the Beast.”

The wedding décor followed a theme of light blues, golds and whites inspired by the room itself. The bride’s gorgeous unique blue dress was a custom creation by Nikki Yassemi of Narces. “Nikki really captured mine and Nelson’s dream for the dress to embrace who I am and our theme of winter romance,” Talia shares.

Talia and Nelson knew they wanted to create a special guest experience at their wedding. The couple opted for a weekday wedding on a Thursday evening. “We greeted our guests as they started arriving at 6 p.m. All the food stations were open, so they were able to start eating and drinking right away,” Talia explains.

At around 8 p.m., the couple changed into their second outfits and the ceremony took began with guests relaxed at their tables. “My father was the officiant, so only our families were present under the chuppah together,” Talia explains. “We enjoyed every moment of the service; we were both very present and we loved it.”

After the ceremony ended, the couple headed down the aisle and immediately had their first dance to the song “With You” by Tyler Shaw—performed by the musician himself. “I styled the music video for the song, and the song itself is about Tyler’s first dance, so it was perfect,” Talia shares. “We danced with our parents halfway through the song.”

When it came to one of the best parts of their day, the couple agrees that the timeline and unconventional format was a great choice. “Everyone kept saying “You’ve figured this out! Eating before the ceremony was amazing!” Talia says. “There was no yawning during the ceremony, everyone was fed and happy and it went over so well!”

A Colourful Five-Event Destination Wedding in Tel-Aviv

Real Weddings

Interior designer Genevieve Bergman and developer Jonathon Freed met in Ontario cottage country when they were just 15 and 18 years old. The pair reconnected via Instagram 15 years later when Genevieve was living in Toronto and Jonathon was living in Winnipeg. “I was at the cottage visiting my family, took a photo of the lake and uploaded it on Instagram,” says Genevieve. “Jonathon was in town for a festival and asked if I wanted to join him and his friends. It was pouring rain so I politely declined, but we kept in touch.” A few weeks later, back in Toronto, Genevieve received a message from Jonathon mentioning his sister lived in the city and he was coming to visit. “He asked if he could take me on a date,” Genevieve says. “I said yes, and over the next few weeks he courted me by sending my favourite cookies with a poem and flowers to my office. He later admitted his sister was actually out of town when we went on our first date, and that he flew in just to take me out!” After eight months of dating long-distance, the couple moved in together, and Jonathon proposed to Genevieve on their one-year anniversary during a trip to Israel and the Amal Coast.

“We knew we wanted a small wedding with our families and close friends, and we immediately both thought of Tel Aviv,” Genevieve says of their location choice. “It was so special to us and the most unique place I had ever been—I loved the energy, the architecture, and especially the ancient port of Jaffa.” The Lawrence in Jaffa, Tel Aviv, proved the perfect venue for the couple’s weekend festivities, with its 3,000-year-old history and picturesque views of the city. “I love a bright, eclectic mix of old-world charm and elegance mixed with pattern, texture and colour,” Genevieve explains. To set the tone for the affair, the couple sent out whimsical save-the-date cards and wedding invitations painted with Israeli animals, flowers and fruit, and a map of their favourite spots around Tel Aviv. “Our wedding consisted of five events—for the kick-off we took everyone to Jerusalem for the day and organized a private tour of the old city, Western Wall, ancient tunnels and Church of the Holy Sepulchre,” Genevieve recalls. “Seeing everyone experience the magic of Jerusalem for the first time was so emotional, and one of the weekend highlights.”

Genevieve and Jonathon tied the knot on a stunning rooftop under a chuppah consisting of over 50 types of flowers, standing on vintage carpets from the famous Jaffa Market. With a team of wedding planners, decorators and venue staff, the couple added personal touches to the site, including custom tablecloths for the reception tables; candlesticks; vintage, coloured-glass vases in multiple shades; and fresh fruit. As an extra-special touch, they had paper fans stamped with their wedding date, hammam towels and jars of olives for guests to take home.

The couple was touched that friends and family travelled from the U.S., Canada and Europe to attend. “My best friend from high school flew to Tel Aviv from Toronto, which is an 11-hour flight, to come for 24 hours to surprise me!” says Genevieve. The newlyweds and their guests danced to both traditional Israeli and hip-hop tunes. “Jonathon and I both love rap and hip-hop music, and bonded over this when we first met,” Genevieve shares. At midnight, guests were treated to a shawarma station that was rolled out onto the dance floor. “Our friends and family said they loved the celebrations, and loved being in Tel Aviv more than any other place they had been to,” Genevieve reveals. “The wedding was somewhat difficult to plan, being so far away and with an eight-hour time difference, but it was all worth it!”

A Vintage Summer Wedding in Bay Bulls, Newfoundland

A Rustic, Antique-Filled Outdoor Wedding in Bay Bulls, Newfoundland - Couple with their Dogs

Kayla O’Brien and Kyle Puddester met while working together as chefs in downtown St. John’s. The pair dated for three years before opening their own restaurant, Fork, in Witless Bay, Newfoundland. In 2017, Kyle proposed to Kayla on her birthday. They were was married 10 months later.

The couple chose The Bread and Cheese Country Inn as their wedding venue because of its scenic outdoor location tucked alongside the Atlantic Ocean. “We love that we decided on an outdoor venue and stuck with it. It perfectly matched the rustic theme we wanted to achieve,” the pair shares. For the bride, maintaining an authentic feel throughout the wedding’s décor details was important. “I was envisioning true rustic Newfoundland,” Kayla explains. “I find a lot of people who go for a rustic look just end up using lots of burlap and mason jars. I didn’t want that kind of rustic.” For florals, Kayla chose to incorporate hand-picked Newfoundland wildflowers. “They are absolutely stunning and free, which is a huge bonus for a wedding budget,” she says. “Many people see them as weeds but I just love them.”

Wanting to keep the wedding as natural-looking as possible, the bride let her bridesmaids pick their own ivory dresses and jewlery. The groomsmen wore the same navy suits, but with personalized accessories as well. “This made the bridal party look like their true selves,” Kayla recalls. During the reception, the bride changed into a flannel shirt and jeans. “I just wanted our wedding to genuinely reflect us and it 100% did,” Kayla remarks.

The day before the wedding, the couple and their families decorated the entire reception tent by themselves with antique furniture and decorations that Kayla had collected the previous winter. “It was stressful but also so fun. It was lovely to see everything come together like we had envisioned it,” she shares. Before the reception, the pig roast for the supper unexpectedly caught fire inside the tent. “Weddings aren’t perfect,” Kayla notes. “Don’t stress over every little detail.”

A Rustic, Laid-Back Barn Wedding in Bradford, Ontario

A Rustic Barnyard Wedding in Bradford Ontario - Couple with Dogs

Newfoundland-native Jacinta had just finished playing in the home opener of her roller derby league, Toronto Roller Derby, when she received the surprise of a lifetime. As her team, the Deathtrack Dolls, high-fived the crowd after the game, Jacinta’s girlfriend, Gillian, stepped out onto the track holding up a homemade sign. Paying homage to Jacinta’s hometown slang, the DIY sign read: “I dies for you Jacinta Pittman. Will you be my missus now and forever?”

Knowing that the farm venue, Bradford Barn, would have a lot of greenery, the couple chose a colour scheme of muted greys and blues to complement the forested landscape. “The venue was so picturesque and had so many different backdrops for photos,” the couple says. Wanting to achieve a “rustic good times” theme, the couple decorated the venue with DIY details including clever signage and interactive games including a giant jenga and ring toss for guests to enjoy during the cocktail hour. Another personalized décor detail was their cake-topper: a bamboo cut out custom designed to look like their dogs. “Our dogs are our babies and it meant so much that we could have them with us at the supper,” the couple says.

An important detail for the couple was including their loved ones on the day’s events. Wanting to commemorate her late grandfather on her big day, Gillian knew she had to wear a tie he had made from their family tartan. Her maid of honour, Dawn, transformed the material into a bowtie, which she wore overtop of pearls her grandmother had worn on her own wedding day. Before the ceremony, Jacinta, who is a hairstylist, braided Gillian’s hair. “It was a really special moment and grounded us for the day,” the couple explains. As wedding favours, the couple gifted guests with jars of honey homegrown by Gillian’s parents. Gillian’s mother, Donna, officiated the wedding. “There was nobody else I would’ve rather had marry us,” Jacinta shares.

As the reception was wrapping up, the couple helped Gillian’s brother, Grantson, propose to his longtime girlfriend, Terra. Continuing the tradition of DIY proposals, the newlyweds held up a sign in front of their one-and-a-half-year-old nephew, asking Terra the big question. “She had no idea and it was really special to be a part of that moment,” the couple remarks. “It really brought everyone together and was one of the most magical moments.”

An Eclectic, Urban Whimsical Wedding in Toronto

Real Weddings

An Eclectic Urban Whimsical Wedding in Toronto - Bride and Groom

Viktoria Liepold and Eric Kiely met at an anime convention in 2010. In 2014, the pair was visiting Hôtel de Glace in Quebec City when Eric surprised Viktoria with a ring presented in a custom Legend of Zelda treasure chest. A month after their engagement, a pre-construction condo unit caught their eye, so the couple decided to delay their wedding to prioritize their dream of home ownership. After four years, three months and 16 days of engagement, Viktoria and Eric’s wedding day finally arrived. “That’s 1,569 days total,” Viktoria remarks.

With so much time to plan and dream about their wedding, Viktoria and Eric wanted to make sure it was an affair worth waiting for. Devoted film lovers, the couple chose Malaparte at TIFF Bell Lightbox as their wedding venue because of the film-inspired décor throughout the space, including its old Hollywood gallery wall and Robert DeNiro and Meryl Streep mosaic tiles in the bathrooms. They also had a branded, red carpet backdrop for guests to enjoy. “We called our wedding theme urban whimsical,” Viktoria shares. “The venue has a very modern, sleek vibe, which we juxtaposed with dreamy florals, soft lighting and fun graphic design.” Carrying this whimsical, celestial theme into the florals, White Oak Flower Co. crafted unstructured, alien-like designs using smoke bush, echinops, and other florals in blush and gold tones. “The tablescapes were spectacular, complete with romantic candles, unique arrangements and iridescent hurricanes that gave the impression of rainbows against the sky,” Viktoria says.

Rather than decorate every inch of the large venue, Viktoria and Eric decided to create special points of interest that would draw their guests’ attention. “We incorporated many of our shared fandoms into the décor, including The Simpsons, Star Wars, Sailor Moon, The Legend of Zelda and Battlestar Galactica,” Viktoria recalls. A focal point of their reception, the couple had a decal mounted on the wall behind their cake that read, “You don’t win friends with salad.” “This was a nod to The Simpsons,” Viktoria explains. “It created a colourful, buzz-worthy backdrop that our guests were photographing all night!” The couple included many other details to showcase their love for spaced-themed shows, like their Simpsons-themed bar, menu, directional and seating signage, and Sailor Moon wands held by Viktoria’s bridesmaids.

In a nod to Viktoria’s Greek roots, a Greek dance troupe performed three traditional dances from her family’s region of Greece. “My mother was scheduled to have hip surgery, but she was so moved by their performance that she got up and started dancing alongside them,” Viktoria explains. “She blew the professionals away!”

A Beautiful, Laid-Back Wedding On Ward’s Island In Toronto

Real Weddings

A Laid-Back, Scandinavian-Style Island Wedding in Toronto, Ontario - Bride and Groom

Caitlyn Ryall was leaving an event at Toronto’s Design Exchange when Sabs Feigler stopped her in the doorway to chat. “We lingered a bit and I left to catch a train at Union Station,” Caitlyn explains. “Next thing I know, I see Sabs running through the station after me. He asked me out and I gave him my number. The next day, he confirmed it would be a ‘date date,'” she says. Caitlyn and Sabs’ first date lasted 12 hours, starting with breakfast before a trip to the zoo, stop at Ikea, dinner at Bellwood’s Brewery and walk in High Park.

In February 2018, Caitlyn and Sabs got married in a city hall ceremony in Copenhagen, Denmark, where they currently live. Following the intimate ceremony abroad, the couple wanted to celebrate with family and friends back home in Toronto. The pair decided to hold their 60-person reception at the Toronto Island, where they shared their first kiss. “We love the campy nostalgia of the Ward’s Island Clubhouse,” Caitlyn shares. “I wanted the exposed beams with lots of globe lights, and Sabs wanted to be close to the water. Our guests from out of town enjoyed riding over on the ferry and were pleasantly surprised by the hidden gem,” she says.

Caitlyn and Sabs mixed minimalist Scandinavian design elements with unique thrift finds and homemade touches to give their décor a warm aesthetic. The day before the wedding, the bride prepared the pale blush and apricot flower arrangements, bouquets, boutonnieres and other décor elements with the help of her University friends. “I arranged a mix of florals and greenery from a wholesale florist as well as a few buckets from a local organic flower farm,” Caitlyn says. “The colours were the perfect transition from summer to fall, and felt like a fresh take on all of the peach weddings out there,” she remarks. After the wedding, the couple donated the flowers to Casey House, a hospital in Toronto, in memory of the bride’s uncle. “It was lovely to extend the life of the flowers enough to bring a few more smiles to the faces of the residents there,” Caitlyn shares.

Looking to embrace the venue’s fun and relaxed atmosphere, the couple hired local Toronto indie band “In Drift” to play original music throughout the evening. “It was a bold move picking a band that may not suit the taste of everyone at the wedding, but we were so happy we did,” Caitlyn says. “They brought t-shirts and CDs and stayed to party with us until the end of the night!”

A Vibrant Blue Styled Shoot Inspired by “Crazy Rich Asians”

Real Weddings

A Modern Blue Styled Shoot Inspired by 'Crazy Rich Asians'" - Bride and Puppy

Inspired by the breathtaking nuptials in the movie Crazy Rich Asians, this styled shoot mixes eclectic florals with colourful geometric shapes to create a modern and luxurious reception setup. “The wedding in the film was un-apologetically over the top, modern and unconventional,” says planner and designer Marianne Noh of Dukes & Daisies Weddings & Events.

For the shoot, Noh incorporated contrasting natural greenery and contemporary design elements against the backdrop of Village Loft’s exposed brick walls. “At first, you wouldn’t think these elements would work well together, but they do!” Noh says. For centuries, blue and purple have been associated with royalty, luxury and elegance. In keeping with this theme, these colours appear in the tablescape, on the cake, in the wedding invitations and throughout the bride’s bouquet. “The shoot is colourful and minimalist, yet romantic, innocent and timeless,” Noh explains.

An extra-sweet detail was including a very special guest—a striking husky mix rescue puppy. “Of course, I had to include Puffin!” Noh exclaims.
