These Are The Features Every Bride Should Accentuate On Her Wedding Day

Fashion & Beauty » Skin Care & Makeup

Kim Soane, makeup artist and executive director of North America artistry for Bobbi Brown Cosmetics, has created beautiful looks for women of all ages during her 15 year career in the makeup industry. We asked Soane to share some of her essential tips and secrets for helping a bride look and feel her best on her big day.

Weddingbells: What are your top five must-have products for every bride?
Kim Soane: “I love our Skin Long Wear Weightless Foundation SP15, Highlighting Powder, Long-Wear Cream Shadow Stick, Luxe Lip Colour, and Corrector –they work together for flawless skin, a long-wearing and subtle eye, and a gorgeous lip.”

Highlighting Powder, $48, bobbibrowncosmetics.com

WB: What is the best feature for brides to accentuate?
KS: “For brides, I like to play up their cheekbones and natural, luminous skin, with glow on the cheekbones, bridge of nose, and Cupid’s bow.”

Long-Wear Cream Shadow Stick, $30, bobbibrowncosmetics.com

WB: How can a bride ensure her makeup lasts throughout the day?
KS: “Skin prep is essential. I recommend using a primer and long-lasting foundation, such as our Skin Long-Wear Weightless Foundation SPF15. After, set the skin with a powder or Bronzing Powder, layering on a Highlighting Powder and then a powder Blush – this way, the colour will last all day and night and won’t fade.”

Luxe Lip Color, $37, bobbibrowncosmetics.com

WB: What is your favourite bridal beauty look?
KS: “I love naturally flush skin, a clean liner that defines the eyes (such as our Long-Wear Gel Eyeliner), and a pretty nude statement lip colour, such as Luxe Lip Color.”

WB: What are your top three don’ts when it comes to bridal makeup?
KS: “Many brides tell us that they want to look like the best versions of themselves on their wedding day. Because the look is often light and natural, I recommend clean liner over a smokey eye. I also avoid putting lip gloss on, because hair and veil can get stuck if the formula is sticky. For photos, I also recommend avoiding highlight along the brow bones in a shimmer or metallic formula – they’ll be emphasized over the eyes in every photo.”

WB: What is the one beauty trend you see on Instagram that doesn’t work for bridal?
KS: “Balancing extra lashes – if the lash line is extra heavy and weighed down by too many lashes, the eyes can appear smaller and heavy. It’s a balancing act!”

Skin Long-Wear Weightless Foundation SPF15, $46, bobbibrowncosmetics.com

WB: Where should a bride look for bridal inspo?
KS: “Definitely search Pinterest for looks to take to a makeup test application, also search fashion show looks from bridal week in New York City or in London. For example, this season, the team at Bobbi Brown worked with designer Reem Acra and the resulting look is beautiful, ethereal, and absolutely wearable.”

WB: What’s your secret beauty tip that nobody really knows about?
KS: “I think a lot of people “know to do it” but I’m not sure if they do it all the time: using eye cream, like our Hydrating Eye Cream. It layers beautifully under makeup, and should be used morning and night, each and every day!”

A Lovely Backyard Wedding In Campbellford, Ontario

Real Weddings

Alessia and Jamie went to the same summer camp as children and crossed paths years later while waiting in line for lunch in downtown Toronto. After running into each other again at a bar, Jamie asked Alessia out and the couple started dating. During a snowboarding trip in Quebec, Jamie had made arrangements with the ski resort to place signs on the hill to ask Alessia to marry him, but a simple conversation with another couple unravelled his grand plan.

“Near the top of the lift, the couple—who had apparently just seen the signs on their previous run—said, “your timing is so great, you’re about to see the cutest thing! Some young man is proposing to his girlfriend with signs that say ‘Lessi, will you marry me?’” Alessia says. “The couple started yelling at each other in French, and Jamie could only laugh… he never really had the opportunity to propose.”

The couple decided not to go with a particular theme, but to fill their celebration with special DIY touches and have the outdoors be the focus. Alessia designed the stationery and her mother baked homemade shortbread cookies as place cards and crafted the raspberry mountain wedding cake. Food was an integral part of the wedding—guests helped themselves to a raw seafood bar, barbeque, handpicked craft beers and homemade desserts. Tacos and ice cream were served as late-night treats.

Alessia and Jamie agreed that there was no better place to tie the knot than Alessia’s family farm in Campbellford, Ontario.

“We originally planned to find a venue in Toronto given the logistics challenges involved in bringing everyone out to Campbellford,” Alessia says. “But ultimately decided there could be no better venue in the world than in our own backyard.”

A Magical Fall Wedding In Prince Edward County

Real Weddings

Megan and Chris wanted their wedding day to pay homage to their most beloved time of year. “Fall is our favourite season. It’s when we love to travel and can place our warmest memories,” Megan says. “The nights start to get cool and the mist forms over the lake in the morning. Our date was a little early to see the full transformation, so we created the mood with burgundy, gold, ivy greens and navy.”

The couple both remember the first time they saw each other. Chris was invited to play the saxophone with a small group for a friend’s 30th birthday party, and Megan was playing host. Seeing each other for the first time on their wedding day proved to be just as memorable.

“Locking eyes for the first time is a still such a vivid moment and wash of feeling. The setting: outdoors, looking out onto a farmer’s field, under an arch made by Chris and dressed in ivy garlands, with our guests seated in church pews,” Megan shares. “Chris’s best man played us down the aisle on an accordion. Our best friend Jeb officiated, starting with the story of how we met, followed by simple vows. Our fairy-tale.”

The couple planned the entire wedding themselves, and made sure to add loads of personal touches. Megan’s mom baked their wedding cake and Chris’s mom filled the dessert table with fall-themed treats. For their wedding favours, the couple commissioned Toronto-based artist LeeAndra Cianci to turn hand-drawn portraits of their guests into a deck of playing cards.

“We agreed on two things we wanted to frame the evening around: bringing our friends and family together for a sit-down dinner filled with conversation and laughter, and dancing to the same band that played the night we met.”

Planning their own wedding didn’t come without its own challenges. A month before they were set to tie the knot, they received an email from their original venue informing them that there had been an accident and they could no longer accommodate their wedding.

“It was devastating at first, but turned out to be a blessing in disguise. Mary and Kevin from 100 Acre Wood stepped in to save the day,” Megan recalls. “It’s a magical, magical setting full of fields and wildflowers, hammocks and treed pathways, and we can’t imagine what we would have done without them.”

A Romantic Destination Wedding In Cabo San Lucas

Real Weddings

A Rustic Boho Wedding in Mexico - Bride and groom

After 11 years together, Krissy and Shayne decided to exchange vows in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. Always wanting a destination wedding, the high school sweethearts decided on a beachside ceremony with a rustic, boho twist. “I didn’t want anything too fancy, but I also didn’t want too much of a laid back vibe. So I brought a romantic feel in with the string lights,” Krissy says. “Every time I pictured my wedding, I always pictured string lights. It adds such a romantic feel and completed the look.”

Though Krissy’s mother passed away before she could see her daughter walk down the aisle, Krissy’s beautiful open-back lace wedding dress held sentimental value. “The year before I got engaged, my mother passed away. We knew it was coming, so she and I would always look at wedding dresses for fun. I remember finding this dress on Pinterest and we both fell in love with it,” says Krissy. “Fast-forward a year, she passed, I got engaged and tried dresses on but I knew I needed that dress. I found the dress on Pinterest, found out it was a company in Australia, and purchased dress without even trying it on. Mom loved it, so I had to have it!”

Krissy says seeing so many loved together in Mexico was one of the best parts of her big day. “Watching 94 of our friends and family, all in one room, having the best time was truly amazing,” she explains.

A Romantic, Boho Wedding In Kerwood, Ontario

A Soft and Intimate Bohemian Wedding - Bride and groom

Mikaela and David first met in high school, on the first day of grade 10 outside their shared English class. “I was new to the school, and even though I met so many people that day, he stood out to me. I remember thinking to myself ‘Hey—that boy is pretty cute, I want to get to know him more’.” Mikaela says. “Little did I know that we would get so close, and become best friends. After a school trip to Europe, weekend movie nights, and many hours spent in art class together, we began dating.”

On their seventh anniversary, the couple exchanged vows in front of 100 of their closest family and friends at Sydenham Ridge Estates in Kerwood, Ontario. Wanting to keep their wedding natural and intimate, Mikaela and David opted for soft greys, light blues, and tons of green and white. The nuptials took place right under a large oak tree draped in white linen, creating an enchanted atmosphere.

“It was the perfect space that didn’t require much added to it to make it feel intimate and inviting,” Mikaela says. “With the creek running through the treed area that surrounded the site, the large oak tree standing tall behind us, and the white linen draped through the branches, the space was romantic and magical.”

To make sure they would remember every detail of their wedding day, Mikaela and David relied on their photographer and videographer to capture their most special moments. “Having a wedding video was at the top of our list, because we thought it was a great way to look back in the years to come at our special day,” Mikaela says. “Having Rebel Hearts Photo and Film do our video was one of the best decisions we made, as Randy and the team captured our day perfectly.”

Botanical Wedding Inspo For Fall Brides

Real Weddings

Blending mustard and gold hues alongside shades of blush, green and a pop of plum, this gorgeous styled shoot is inspired by the transition between the end of summer and the beginning of autumn.

“We want people to feel inspired to bring warmth into their modern celebrations with a touch of whimsy by bringing the outside in,” Grace says. “The idea is to bring together botanical and modern elements that create an open and intimate atmosphere, filled with warmth under a late summer or autumn sun.”

The idea for this styled shoot came from a poem by Victoria Erickson, a popular Instagram poet. The team of vendors behind the shoot say these words, specifically, fuelled their imaginations: “This strangely still pause between summer and autumn, greenery and gold, and the heat and rising wind that is once gain readying itself to rush it all away in a climactic symphony of colour and scent is – in my opinion, one of the best parts about living on earth.”

A Lush, Dreamy Wedding In Kleinburg, Ontario

Real Weddings

After first crossing paths in high school, Kenzie and Nick began their life together after graduation. “We went to high school together, but didn’t start dating until we were 20,” the couple says. While on a two-week European vacation, Nick popped the question in Paris under the night sky with the Eiffel Tower sparkling in the background.

Kenzie and Nick say they dreamed of a wedding that was both simple and stylish, with elevated details including lush florals and pretty balloons.

The pair recited their vows before 60 guests at The Doctor’s House, a historic and charming countryside chapel and event space in Kleinburg, Ontario. The venue’s gardens, which included pops of green, blush pink, ivory and hints of gold, effortlessly complemented the bridesmaid dresses, flower arrangements and décor. The exposed beams, hardwood floors and natural light in their intimate reception space kept the theme simple yet elegant.

A Gorgeous Pink and Gold Industrial Wedding in Toronto - Newlyweds and Toronto skyline

Jessica and Misha’s wedding honoured the couple’s heritage and celebrated the strength of love and creation of a new life together. The couple both graduated from Queen’s University and tied the knot almost 10 years to the day they first met.

As a tribute Misha’s heritage, the couple said their I do’s under a traditional Jewish chuppah, and celebrated Jessica’s South African heritage with floral arrangements featuring king and queen Protea, the country’s national flower.

Wanting to pay homage to their gorgeous venue, Evergreen Brick Works, Jessica and Misha’s officiant compared the building blocks of a successful, sturdy marriage to the longevity of the historic quarry. “We felt the conversion of this former active quarry into a beautiful shared outdoor space and the symbolism of bricks themselves as a building material was a strong metaphor for creating our new life together,” Jessica says. “While we love nature, we aren’t the most earthy people so we worked with our planner, Lexi Haslam of Lexington & Co, to bring some glam to the rustic space with chandeliers, velvet lounge furniture, and soft linens.”

To add some personal touches, their vows were inspired by a famous scene in the bride’s favourite movie, When Harry Met Sally. “We stole the ‘I love that…’ repeating structure from the final scene where Harry acknowledges his love for Sally on New Year’s Eve, surprising each other with five things we deeply loved about the other person before making shared promises that varied from the sincere (‘I promise to be patient and kind’) to the silly but very important ‘I promise to make the bed if I get up last,’ Jessica says.

The couple made sure that their wedding was a night to remember. The newlyweds and their guests marched from the ceremony space to their reception with the help from a New Orleans-style second line parade, and performed a choreographed hip-hop number to keep the party going. “It was so fun to completely surprise all of our friends and family by running onto the packed dance floor in different outfits and breaking into ‘This is How We Do It’ by Montell Jordan,” Jessica says. “The compilation of four tracks ended with Misha sitting in a chair while I danced to Beyonce’s ‘Crazy in Love’. The crowd was losing it!”

Truvelle 2019 Wedding Dresses

Truvelle has launched a stunning new collection to celebrate five years of creating gowns for the modern, elegant bride. Inspired by and named after ladies close to the brand, each dress evokes an effortlessly feminine vibe.

Chiffon, tulle, organza and satin fabrics used throughout the collection make each gown unique from the rest, and the subtle V-necklines and scooping backs complement the lace and floral details found on each dress.

The gorgeous ¾-length-sleeve Alannah gown is striking and flattering for any bride. The scalloped neckline combined with the beaded lace adds elegance, but the tassels down the back gives a touch of bohemian flair.

The Kyra gown is a standout in the collection. The sparkle of the stone beading on the bodice and skirt shines on the smoky tulle, taking inspiration from the art deco movement while still remaining fashion-forward. The chiffon ties on the bodice brighten and soften the gown, adding a touch of romance.

A Black, Green And Gold Wedding In Kleinburg, Ontario

Real Weddings

Shannon and Travis met online, and have been inseparable ever since their first date.

As a wedding planner and stationery designer, Shannon has a creative eye for detail and design. “It was so nice to set the tone and feeling for our wedding day from the beginning,” Shannon says. “I loved how the invites really enhanced and tied in the design for the entire day.”

The lush, green gardens of The Doctor’s House in Kleinburg, Ontario allowed Shannon’s vision to come to life. Drawing from inspiration from their home décor, Shannon and Travis incorporated tons of plants, gold accents and geometric patterns throughout their wedding, and made sure to add some personal touches.

“I love how bright and inviting our home feels, and we both really wanted our wedding day to feel the same,” Shannon says. “The geometric shelving unit, featuring greenery and images of our loved ones who have passed on – my husband and I built that ourselves and it was so incredible to have that memory and make it be a showpiece at our wedding for our guests.”

A Romantic Estate Wedding In Toronto

A Romantic, Rustic Estate Wedding in Toronto - Newlyweds

A simple picnic date on Toronto’s Ward’s Island ended in an engagement when Carlo proposed to Olivia, with the city skyline serving as a romantic backdrop.

Wanting to ensure their styles and personalities shined through for their wedding, the couple chose to weave in touches of gold, champagne and blush alongside shades of blue. “I’ve always imagined getting married in a beautiful home like in the movie Father Of The Bride, so when we came across Harding Waterfront Estate we knew it was the perfect venue,” Olivia shares. “We knew we wanted a wedding that was very us, so naturally the wedding theme was simply a collection of things we like.”

The couple also ensured their friends played an important role in their wedding. “I have really talented friends who really made my Pinterest dreams come true,” Olivia says. “My girlfriend Sue Lay of The Kindred Letterer is an amazing calligrapher. She designed our seating chart using vintage windows and our table numbers, which were hand-painted using watercolours.”

During their grand entrance at the reception, the couple surprised their guests by walking in with traditional lion dance performers. “We saw this as an opportunity to weave in my culture and share it with our friends and family,” Olivia explains.

The dance floor was full all night, with the bride and groom’s parents and friends partying into the wee hours. “We also handed out McDonald’s on the dance floor, which was definitely a highlight!”
